Benjamin's Story
Life
Wow. My life? Not what I had planned for or expected, but I wonder who's life is. I will admit that I didn't take the time to enjoy it. I was (am) nerdy and bookish. I was on the Scholar's Bowl team and worked at the mall selling shoes at night and on the weekends. I was pretty dull compared to the high school studs of the movies and the exciting kids I see my kids watching on the Disney channel.
My journey led me down the street form Butler to UAH, where I had an absolute blast during my college years. It was too short in retrospect. A grew a bit out of my shell, and participated in a number of campus activities. I had the pleasure of working with the US Forest Service in Colville, Washington two summers as a firefighter. I had a wonderful relationship with a beautiful, dear woman during my college years, and made many dear friends. I had skilled and talented professors throughout my time at the university.
After college I had plannned on going to graduate school, but fate stepped in and my dreams of earning a PhD in history went away (hopefully only delayed, but...Expand for more
probably gone). I had been working as a waiter at a Wings in Huntsville, and Bob offered me a job in management. With few other prospects, and still smarting from not being in graduate school, I jumped at it.
My time at Wings was enjoyable. After about a year managing a store in Huntsville, I moved to Tuscaloosa and managed the training and HR functions of the company. I am still friends with a number of the men and women I worked with from 1991-1996.
I followed some friends from college to Compass Bank. I landed in Birmingham, and worked there for about 10 years, mostly in jobs in the HR department as a trainer and later a training manager. When the SouthTrsut/Wachovia merger was announced, I made the decision to find a sales job within the bank. I became a commercial lender. During my time with the bank, in 1997, I met the woman who became my wife. We were married in 1999.
I moved from Compass to Wachovia in December of 2005. I am still a commercial lender, though in time I think I would prefer to get back into the HR function, specifically in a training capacity.
