Bernard's Story
Life
In 1960 my parents dragged me, kicking and screaming, to California, away from my relatives, friends and home, to a new life. That first winter had me loving Ca. and it's t-shirt weather.
In 1963 I was offered a part time, after school and weekend, job at teh Stuft Shirt Restaurant in Upland, Ca. Unknowing the meaning of "work", I decided to try it. I spent 5 years as a buss boy, dishwasher, banquet waiter, painter and relief janitor there. I meet and worked with some great people.
1966 Bonita Grad. I spent two and a half semesters at Mt. Sac before being drafted into Uncle Sams Army. Fort Ord, Ca. became my new home for about four months then off to Ft. Gordon, Ga. for Radio Teletype School. Three months there then home for 15 days leave before Vietnam where I served in the 101st. Ariborne Division, 501st. Signal Bn. I came home and was hired by GTE where I spent the next 28 years before retireing as an instrument shopman, cable splicer, engineering fielder, then outside plant engineer. My position at retirement was Infrastructure Provisioning, Access Design, Outs...Expand for more
ide Plant Engineer. My asignment was throughout most of the Pomona Valley with my main asignment of the City Of Pomona. I retired in 1997 and now live to fish, gamble and play on the computer.
In 2003 I got a chance to do something I always wanted to while I was in high school. Work at the L.A. County Fair. My roommate told me that I wouldn't make any money but I advised her that it wasn't the money but the chance to fufil a dream I had aways had. I ended up in sales selling Direct TV systems and enjoyed every minute working there. Two months after the fair closed, I got a job offer I couldn't refuse. I ended up working telecommunications outside plant engineering again but for a contract company this time. It has been 5 years and I am still working.
College
I started college at Mt. Sac but Uncle Sam had other ideas. I was drafted in the middle of my third semester. I did take a couple night courses after my military discharge but the company I worked for put us on mandantory 60 hour work weeks and left no time for study or home work. I gave up and never got my Associate Degree.
