Bertha's Story

After graduation I married and became a mother to my now 39 year old son John, who is a principal of a High School here in Missouri. Ironic since I spent more time in Mr Migneco's (spelling off) office than in the class rooms. I did baby sitting and odd clerical jobs to be a stay at home mom most of the time. My 2nd son is now 33 and lives near me with his young wife and their new 6 month old baby boy. He has 3 kids all together now. He works customizing cars, tinting windows and is a tatted up wild child. Got a lot of his Mom in him. I work for a local Home Health agency in St. Louis and am a proud grandmother to 5 children who are my world. I have been blessed in this life. I am currently single from my 1st and only husband although I married him twice LOL, always was a slow learner. We are still a family/ friends. Our kids are great. Time has flown by and I have never attended any reunions. I didn't feel much like I fit in in High School. I was going through a lot of loss in those years. My sister passed away when I was a freshman and my father passed away in my sophmore year. I don't think I would have graduated had it not been for the help of several outstanding teachers who helped me in so many ways and on so many levels. Mrs. Schoefell, Mrs. Berris, Mrs. Runde, Mr. Ken Altman. Gosh I am probably spelling their names wrong now. Heck I am lucky I can remember them LOL. While I may not be able to spell their names correctly I will never forget their compassion, kindness and loving support during these difficult years of my life. Janice Smalley, John Allen, Terry Cantrell, are a few of the names that I would love to reconnect with. Through classmates I have reconnected with two of my very best friends, Sue Tanz, and Rena White. Of all my elementary years at so many of the south st louis schools (we moved around a lot) Sherman, Mullanphy, Wade, Adams, Hancock, plus those I attended in Panama IL made it hard for me to hold onto and trust into deep friendships. David Mattingly, who dropped out and has since passed away was one with whom I kept in contact with for some years as we both had small children early and lived nearby. We went through a lot together and he was more than a friend, he was like the brother I never had; except I was his protector LOL. I miss him and I look forward to the chance to re connect with others who shared the prescious times of our youth together. What a much simpler time than these in which our grandchildren now have to face growing up in. I hope that I touched someones life and made it a little better, a little lighter with laughter, and made some good memories for someone to share with their grandchildren. We are the story tellers, now if they believe us or not is another story! My childhood was one of adventure and a lot of relocating so long time friends were difficult until a lot of us met up in high school. My dad owned a carnival and after my parents divorced I got to spend his last 4 years alive during the summer. I ran rides, rode them till I was drunk with fun. I met a lot of people in my life. There are so many wonderful people. I look for the bright side and try t...Expand for more
o hold those special people near and dear. I drove my Red Wing motorcycle back and forth to work when I first divorced and met all kinds of new friends during that experience LOL! Man how the time has flown but what a hell of a ride!! While I made some big mistakes and dumb choices I wouldn't trade a day of it. It makes me who I am today. I finaly like me! Ashamed you have to reach 57 to really accept just who you are and to realize you are Okay just as you are! I wasted so much time always thinking if only... I was smarter, prettier, wealthier. Now looking back I see how very "Rich" I was and I become "VeClempt" as they would sat on SNL. I've saved a life twice while working at the hospital. Awesome. I've helped many be able to stay in their homes instead of going into nursing homes while I was a HomeCare nurse aide, a job I truly Loved and found so rewarding. I still do homecare just work in the office now, in a cubicle (with a window view of a beautiful little gazebo built in memory of a coworker who passed. My boss is a wonderful man whom I admire, respect, and consider a friend. My co workers are like an extended family and since I spend so much time there It is great. I would like to spend more time now with my sister though and my grandchildren. Retirement isn/t an option for me for a long while. I would like to travel some, I think all of your stories are giving me the wonder lust! I still would love to find Janice Smalley, Irene Fleeman, Jim Manness ( I had just the biggest crush ever on him and he didn't know I existed. His younger brother was my good friend and I have learned that he was murdered. I still can not believe it. I was just reminded by an old friend in Il that after summer vacation on the carnival ( I had been schooled by the strippers in the girlie show that summer) and when asked by our teacher what we wanted to be when we grew up, I proudly blurted a Stripper. once again I was off to the priniciple's office for nothing LOL. I was dead serious. I thought they were so pretty, had the best clothes and the guys were nuts about them. Oh well, I did a 2 week stint as a dance over at Dotties body Shop in Il when I was divorced but was weirded out by the freaks that came there and quit, while I danced in a bikini and didn't do topless or strip I did dance and got paid for it so that was sort of like making my dream come true LOL, Oh well I made $600 in tips in 2 week ends, paid my bills that had fallen behind and put all that clerical crap Mrs Runde drummed into my head to use as a temp. The only things I really have left on my "bucket list " is trying out hang gliding, and going up in a hot air balloon. Gotta get those done. So many of you scattered all over the place and some abroad I've found on facebook. Looks like our class turned out a fine crop of kids that did do things to make a difference! I still can't pass up a carnival midway though. I often reflect on the young boy I met on the carnival in Nebraska who joined the service, we wrote each other for 2 years, he asked me to marry him when he got out and he never made it. There were a lot of them that didn't and that is so sad.
