Beth's Story
My last name is now Monts. I grew up near LaPorte, IN until my sophomore year of high school (New Prarie) and then moved to southern California (El Cajon). After high school I moved back to Indiana with my family. I married in 1978 and moved to Galveston, Texas with my husband in 1979. That's when I started in the insurance business. I divorced in 1982 and went back to college at night while working full time and being a single parent. I got my Associates Degree at a junior college, then my Bachelors in accounting at the University of Houston/Clear Lake (Magna Cum Laude) and then my CPA license. In 1997, I moved to Columbia, SC to become the Statutory Accounting Manager with The Seibels Bruce Group, Inc. Within two years, I was promoted twice and became the Controller. In 2000, that company invested in a new start-up insurance company in Sarasota and I moved there to become the CFO. That company was merged with another insurance company in 2004 while the SC folks started another insurance company, Gulfstream Property and Casualty Ins Co. I was with Gulfstream from 2004 until May of 2010 again as CFO. I am currently Controller, Treasurer and Director of T.H.E. Insurance Company in Treasurer Island, FL.
I have one daughter, Kayte, who was born in 1980. Kayte owns the Greek restaurant/bar, Aurora, in Newport Beach, CA. No grandchildren...Kayte's not married. I am currently single, but loving life right now. In June of 2013, I traveled to Istanbul, Turkey and Algeria to visit friends I had come to know over...Expand for more
the internet. I was invited to a Muslim wedding in Algeria and stayed with the family - so total cultural immersion. Of the people I met in Algeria, I was the first American they had ever met!
Some things you don't know about me - I like to take advantage of "once in a lifetime" opportunities, so I got to ride with the Bicentennial Wagon Train for a day in 1976, and I was a VIP escort at the 1992 Republican Convention in Houston. I got an upgraded security pass on the last day and was on the floor of the Convention when George H.W. Bush accepted the nomination and they dropped all of the balloons. (OK, so it's not so great to be associated with any "Bush" these days, but it was a great experience at the time!) I attended a Stanley Cup playoff game the year when the Tampa Bay Lightening won the Stanley Cup. I also was in Boston in 2007 when the Red Sox won the World Series and got to attend the parade they had through downtown. I did get to go to the first two World Series games in 2008, as my team, the Rays, went from being in last place the previous year to the World Series! Shortly after Michael Jackson's death, I participated in the staging of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in the streets of downtown Sarasota. That was a lot of fun! Most recently, I attended the last space shuttle flight, Atlantis, on July 8, 2011. However, I think my biggest claim to fame is meeting and having my picture taken with Tom Selleck a few years ago. In case you can't tell....my favorite saying is: "Life is what you make of it!"
