Beth's Story
After high school I went to school at Western in Macomb. I loved the social aspects of it more than the academics. I left WIU after my second quarter of Sophmore year. Once back in Ottawa, I worked at Sheridan Correctional Center and returned to school at Northern. I finally received a BS in Sociology in '84. I continued in graduate school but found that it was not going to get me where I thought I wanted to be. While attending NIU, I met my husband and we were married in '86. In '87, I quit working at the prison and went to Law School at NIU. I graduated Law School in '90, not before having my first son, Adric, during my last year. After passing the bar, I worked in Kane County doing legal research for the judges. In '91 I was hired by the Kane County Public Defender's Office as an assistant public defender. I had my second son, Dagan in '93. I remain in the Kane County Public Defender's Office, currently as the Fi...Expand for more
rst Assistant which means that I am the second in command. I represent people who can not afford to hire lawyers and have now spent my entire adult life with convicted felons and those working to not be convicted.
My husband and I were separated in 2003 and divorced in 2004. We have a very amicable divorce and have always been a united force in raising our sons who live with me in DeKalb, IL. I have reconnected with a friend that I met right after HS and we have been a couple for a few years now. Jim lives in Ottawa so we have a commuter relationship which suits us for now.
Once the boys are out on their own, I would love to travel and settle down in Southern France. Jim and I went to France, Italy and Switzerland a few years ago and I found myself constantly saying "we could live here". Now that retirement is more than just something old people think about, I find myself wondering how I am going to make it happen.
