Betsy's Story
Upon HS graduation, I went to Southern Connecticut. I received my degree in Special Education with a minor in Health. My first teaching job was at Schaghticoke, where I filled in for 6 months for the teacher that was on maternity leave. That class was a group of 8th graders with "emotional" needs...for lack of a better word. That was tough!! After that, I worked at Devereux Glenhome in Washington, CT. This was a private school for kids with significant emotional and learning problems. I stayed there for 7 months as the reading teacher and left after having had a chair thrown at me. I then was hired at Washington Primary School in Washington Depot in August of 1987. I taught grades kindergarten through fifth grade and really enjoyed it. My students had learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral needs, autism, down syndrome, etc. I stayed at the primary school for 15 years and then moved up to Shepaug Middle School where I taught 7th grade for 3 years and now 8th grade. My group this year was tough....all boys and 85% had behavioral concerns. I "looped"with them fro...Expand for more
m 7th grade...so I really got to know them. Last year I co-taught in the Science classroom with Charlene Barksdale (Scott's wife). This coming year we will be doing the same.
Personally, I married in 1990, had Matthew in 1993, divorced in 1995, remarried in 2001 (Kevin from Newtown) and had Reilly in 2003. Reilly was our miracle baby...he wasn't suppossed to be and we were ready to adopt. However, after giving up all hope of having a baby, I became pregnant at 39 (argh!)
Matt will be a sophomore at NMHS and plays football as the center. He's been on the honor roll, high and highest, all 4 semesters. (Proud Mama) Reilly will be entering Kindergarten at Northville this fall. It's great....attitudes on both ends, trying to seek independence,....no wonder I'm going gray!
I have many animals....which I feel is my calling. Someday, teaching will be over and I'll be out there rescuing whatever animal I can possibly save. And yes, I am the true country bumpkin...we now have chickens! Who would've thunk it!!
That's my life in a nutshell. More to follow.
