Betsy's Story

Life I grew up in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, in a big family with a large extended family. I worked at a local drugstore for a great boss while I was in high school. I left home immediately after graduation, and I worked two jobs just to keep a roof over my head. I was looking for an opportunity for challenge and adventure, not just paying my rent. I left Wisconsin shortly after high school (bye! see ya!) to join the military, serve my country while seeing the world and earning money to go to college. I first served on active duty in the Army Reserve, as a Clinical Specialist (advanced medic), then joined the US Navy, and served a total of 10 years. I had a variety of jobs from initially working on the wards, to running a clinic, serving in drug and alcohol prevention, administration, in the field, in the emergency room, and on an ambulance. I was fortunate enough to live and work in Europe and across the US, and very blessed to have taken care of, lived, or worked with some of the finest people in the world. I am still in contact with some of them today. I completed my first degree shortly after I exited the military, from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. It was hard to get a degree going to night school and with so many transfers, as this was before online and offsite schools were readily available. After I got out, I sold pharmaceuticals for a large company. After making great money but with little satisfaction, I returned to Wisconsin and went to nursing school and have worked as an RN since, primarily in ER and ICU, but I have worked or floated to many different areas both in and outside of the hospital. After living in both South Carolina and Colorado, I returned to Wisconsin to raise my son, a wonderful young man who is strong of heart and of character. I met and married Fred, the love of my life and my true companion. Although at times I've taken the road less traveled, what brings m...Expand for more
e the most happiness is the routines of day to day life with family and friends. I am the first in my family to attend or graduate from college. I first started college in 1979, when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. I went sometimes part time, sometimes full time, mostly evening and weekend courses, finally attending a total of 9 colleges. My first experience ON CAMPUS during day classes was at Univ of Illinois-Champaign, and I was still the same age most of the other students. I was also active duty Navy, and it was kind of strange the first time I came on campus in uniform. I finally finished my degree at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale with a 3.8. I look back and wonder how I managed to do it, and wonder what made me so serious and driven, but I DID have some FUN too! I obtained a second degree in Nursing from Cardinal Stritch College, with nearly a 4.0, also attending school full time, working full time, and raising a son single. I remember being VERY sleep deprived. The thing that I have accomplished that I am the most proud of is having raised a wonderful son, who is also very dedicated to serving others. Although the path he has chosen is quite different than mine, we share many of the same ideals. He is currently working full time as well as attending college full time. I have diverse interests and diverse friends, which keeps me busy. I'm a bit intense, which unfortunately doesn't always endear me to others, however I am passionate about making this world a better place. I am more interested in a person's character than their bankroll, and what someone is willing to give of themselves to others. I hope to return to a master's program in the future, to increase my ability to contribute my share to decreasing human suffering in the world. I still enjoy working with the military and veteran population, and still find them among the finest friends I could ever hope to make.
