Betts's Story

I started Winyah Academy in the 5th grade. We were in the Pink Elephant...that was the best school building ever. Our 5th grade class took french up on the third floor in the only room the Fire Marshal woudl allow the school to use up there. We learned to conjugate verbs in french before we were taught in english. I remember the upper level classes disecting cats I think...is that true? When we got to the 10th grade, we disected frogs under this most unusual science teacher...Ms. Ellison...who took our class outside to watch her cut a chicken's head off and them made us watch the chicken run around with it's head off! She said this was to demonstrate reflex action. Then she had us pass it's head around the room in a pan and made sure we each took a good look. Davis Bourne was in our class andI believe his father was the Chairman of the school's Board of Directors. Anyway, Ms. Ellison did not teach again the next year. Soccer was the best! I'm so glad we didn't play football...and I bet the guys are glad too as arthritis is "settin' in these days. The girls got to play one soccer game...Powder Puff Soccer, Yank called it. At the closing of the game, I had the ball and Sally Lumpkin was the goally. Yank( the couch) yelled for...Expand for more
me to pass the ball to Elizabeth Forrester...a much better. Then I saw Sally look in Elizabeth's direction and I couldn't resist, I kicked the ball...in. We won the game, but Yank was not happy with me...as all of you who played under him can imagine. Remember 'the look' he would give. He didn't have to a word, but when he did...it got worse. Everyone wanted to please him, but it wasn't easy...he made you work for it, in class and on the field. Winyah Academy was a good school. I didn't go to the 12th grade... they had done such a good job preparing us for college, I just went on after 11th grade to the College of Charleston and graduated in Fine Arts with an emphsis in Architectural History. Mrs. Wyndam did a good jop with english and vocabulary. Thatcher Paris may have read his way through our classes, but he was such a character, I managed to learn a good bit from him too. The best and craziest teacher was Yank Albers. He taught us not to expect the world to be fair, not to wait to be called upon, but to volunter and that looking down when he ask a question would get you called on. He taught lessons about life and learning. Good memories. What happened to spell check? Wasn't around back then, but it sure is nice. Betts Nixon
