Betty's Story

Life My name is Betty Goodson Kurtz. I went to Davis High School in 1955 and then Sam Houston opened in the fall of 1955. I would love to hear from some of my friends of the earlier years..... Life doesnt always turn out the way you expect it to happen.... but I can say my life has come full circle.... I married to Kenneth Crowell during my senior year at Sam Houston and went to live in Germany where he was stationed. I later came home and we did not remain married. I did not see him for more than 40 years. Much later i married Edison Kurtz. He was a 1956 graduate of Sam Houston and after 39 and 1/2 years of marriage he passed away in 1998 from Lung Cancer at the age of 59 1/2. He was a fine man and the most wonderful family man to our 5 daughters and 10 grand children. He did not live to see the great grands. In 2002 again I was reunited with my "first love" (Kenneth). He passed away in April, 2008. We enjoyed the final years of his life together. He could always make me laugh and was so interesting. We traveled and bowled, walked miles and miles every day and danced and remembered times from younger days down at "Spring Creek" and "Princes Drive Inn". He kept telling me he was going to take me back to Germany and to to "Paris". When we went to Tennessee to see his granddaughter I mentioned "Paris" again. So the next day we got up early and he took me to "PARIS" Tennessee and bought me a T-Shirt. We had planned to return to Germany and other places we had been too but time passed to quickly. I am always reminded of how blessed I am to have had two great loves in my life. I feel very special! And so many wonderful friends. My daughters tell me I should get "involved" in things again so I am trying. Isn't it stange how after your children grow up they want you to stay busy, busy, busy... and they help you by volunteering "your" services???? and finding all kind of things for you to do. I thank God for everyday that we attended church, our family dinners with relatives and the music and dancing recitials, and the many carpools, P.T.A. meetings, football games, and all the other functions we attended throughout the years. I did not think at the time it was easy but just looking back now I think it all counted. We had family time and always had rules. It passes on and gives great value to life and now I hear myself and their dad in my daughters speech and actions and I think OK! What a valuable return! When I look back to my teen years I think being a teen in the 50's was a wonderful time. It was so much fun and how I wish that the kids today could enjoy their lives a little bit more and just be "kids" instead of "miniture adults" with so much early responsibllity. But we have come so far with all the new technology and new things on the horizons every day. So the kids of today are so smart. "Its scarry at times! Thanks for reading my life story I hope your lives have been wonderful and I really enjoy hearing from my "Classmates" friends. Betty (Goodson) Kurtz I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a wonderful idea. As it turns out, they were Not exactly right. I became the mother of 5 daughters, 8 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 4 great grands.... i have treated and been available for various wounds, colds, scraps, broken bones, (Hank if you read this I mean you....for a boyfriend who thought his mother would hurt him because he broke his leg during football practice) she was a single mother he was the oldest and called me to come before his mom got there.... and seen many a cut, bump and bruise and and attended to most of these things without to much knowledge at the time.....we somehow survive and it never falls that something new will occur. . What do i do to let off steam when i am really upset..... Read and Pray...... if that does not work..... go to the gun range..... If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have an office to myself, flowers on my desk and pictures, and plenty patience to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Elizabeth Taylor.... she is just great. She just never gives up.... 8 marrages and still going..... My pet is ...Expand for more
Lobo.... my keeshund.... he is a great pet.... just took him on a trip he is the best..... If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the bedroom and add on a enclosed small pool. My dream home would be Adobe with heated floors and southwestern interior..... My children have taught me patience, you must finish a task, (pregancy 9 months) what the first 4 tried the last one will know and not try it that way. They will invent a new and better way of doing the same thing only different. RULES do work! You may go crazy trying to keep them in place but it is worth every minute of it.... Let your children be children..... and your teenager ask questions. Get involved. Consistency works! It is hard to be a "PARENT".... but lots of fun and great times. When they grow up what you do in the past becomes their future. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% to my church and some to a little church somewhere that is in need of it, 10% to charity, then spend the rest on family, friends and needy. My current age is 72. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be deceased. I was so completely dumb. Retired! I still read, and keep up with lots of things..... career aspriations.... to be a good mom, and meemaw. No I try to stay within my style.... I dress to please myself.... if i am happy then i think that is what is important.... although i must say i am a little bit southwestern.... at times... My daughters still go through my clothes when they come..... so I must be doing something right????? I share my home with my daughter and her husband two dogs, about 6 cats, which I find fun.... we have a rather large house and large yard.... about 4,000 sq feet so sometime i do not even see them all day..... we come and go and let each other know where and when we are going but it is working..... .My son-in law is a train engineer for Amtrac and my daughter is a Master Gardener. In 10 years, I hope to be still running around..... going places, and of course napping. I'm going to get wherever i go by plane, train (my son-in-law is an Amtrac engineer, or by car if i am still able to drive...... or one of my children or grandchildren can drive me around in my cool car.... a dodge magnum with a Hemme..... they get a kick out of that.... but right now i don't let any of them drive except for Winston..... he does not go fast.....(although i think he would if i were not with him-he is not perfect you know) My oldest friend is Anita Macias. She is from Heidleberg Germany.... came to this country with Henry in the 60's and did not speak any english..... i met her through our daughters friendship and have been friends since then.... we still talk on a regular basis and get to gether when we can...... My first job was at Houston Lighting & Power Company, downtown where I got paid $275 monthly for Customer Service. That was back in the days when you listened to the customer (because they were always right) and if you had any bad thoughts you just jotted them down on a piece of paper as you listened to the unhappy customer........ Sometime their home electricty was accidently cut off when we did a cut off somewhere.... by accident of course! I did not work long because my second daughter became very sick and i just could not leave her...... did not go back to work until much...much later..... What I remember most about this job was talking to customers and pulling the files from the big file drawers on the wall to do cut off's and turn on's. . May Festivals..... at the Roosevelt elementary school where i went.... every year we would circle the May Pole with pretty paper and flowers. We would wind it around and around..... I think every grade did something but i can't remember now.... You never saw little girls in pants..... dresses! I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were almost right..... i became a mother of 5 girls, 8 grandson's 2 granddaughter's and 3 greatgrand daughters, and a grandson.... so cuts, scraps, broken bones you name it and we probably had it..... so i think every parent is a care giver at some point in their life..... .
