Betty's Story

New update for 2020 This year has been Magic and tragic.. My partner of 43+ years, Mary Lu Newberg tragicly passed away Ocotober 18 this year after several months of battling pancreatic cancer. It is an unrelenting terrible disease. She died at home with hospic care. She was 77 years old. Graduated from Bentley HS in 1961. The magic event was our travel to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada in February (before the cancer was known to us) to see and experience the fancinating Aurora Borealis. It was truely awsome. New update for 2019 My bucket list is shorter now but still there are items and places to consider. Revisited The Sea Of Cortez in March this year. This second time we went around the southern tip of the Peninsula to the Pacific west side. There we had close, friendly and thrilling encounters with Gray whale females and their calfs. Incredible to have an animal that large seek you and allow you to touch her. And to bring her calf to interact with you! The Pacific side of the peninsula was rough sailing. Not as bad as going through the Drake Passage to get to Antarctica, but a bit bumpy. New update for 2018 Another year for exciting travel. I will finally get to visit the 7th continent - Antarctica this year in November. From polar bears to penguins! Very special. My parents instilled in me the wonder of travel. My mother made sure that my brothers and I knew our country and took us to visit every one of the 48 states. Since then I have visited Alaska, Hawaii, and six continents. Antarctica has long been on my bucket list and this year I am going. Spent 2 weeks in Michigan this summer in July. Stayed at a beach house on the east shore of lake Michigan with friends, visitied my almamater MSU and visited other frineds in Metro Detroit area. Also visited the Detroit Zoo. If you have not been there in awhile I urge you to do so. It is fabulous. Lots of money had been donated to make it a first class zoo. And it has a wonderful exhibit hall dedicated to Antarctica. Going back to Michigan in October and will visit the zoo again, when it is not so hot. _____________________________________________________________ New update for 2016 Good year with more exciting travel. This year in October we went back to Churchill, Manitoba Canada. This time to see and photograph Polar Bears. AWESOME! Stayed in Churchill for 5 days. A small town/community on the west side of Hudson Bay. The bay is 3 times the size of Germany and it completely freezes over in the winter. The bears are beautiful and dangerous. They are the largest land predator in the world and 2/3 of the wold's population live near the Hudson Bay. I went dog sledding while there, but did not have the chance to see the northern lights - too overcast at night. _____________________________________________________________________ New update: 2015 has been a good year. Cancer is still in remission, that is good. January traveled to St. Augustine, Florida to celebrate the 70th birthday of one of my best friends from elementary school , Kathy. Had a great time with her and her children. Traveled again in...Expand for more
July to Churchill, Manitoba Canada to see the Beluga whales. Fantastic! For my birthday this year in September my friend Kathy paid me a surprise visit! Awesome time with her here in Atlanta. Joined Ancestry.com to begin a search for my birth parents. Very, very interesting. Also very tedious. ____________________________________________________________________ Another update: The last part of 2014 was a bit scary. Just before my birthday in September I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a mastectomy October 20, 2014. All is well now. Found it early and there is very slim chance of it returning. I certainly did not see that train coming!!! In 2014 went to Alaska in May. What an absolutely awesome place! Went again with National Geographic/Lindblad aboard the Sea Lion. That was our hotel for 8 days. It is a small ship, only 61 passenger size, so we were able to get in close to islands and glaciers. That completes my quest to visit all 50 states. Don't know where to go next. ________________________________________________________________________ Made it to the Galapagos Islands in 2012. Awesome place! Fantastic encounters with wildlife. Went on an Expedition with National Geographic/Lindblad. Incredible adventure. Inspiring. Met lots of wonderful people from all over the country. _____________________________________________________________________ I love to travel. In June 2008 went on a transatlantic voyage from Southampton, England to New York City on the Queen Mary 2. Then December 2008 went to the Sea of Cortez to do some whale watching. December 2009 headed to Maui for sun and more whale watching. All in all , I have traveled to 6 of the 7 continents. Not yet been to Antarctica, don't know if I will make it there. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1966 I married Doug Fahle that same summer. We divorced in 1979 after 13 years of marriage. I lived in Michigan until 1985 when I moved to Atlanta, GA and I have been here ever since. I visit Michigan from time to time to see family and friends but I never stay too long - too cold for a "southern girl" now. While I was in education for 20 years in Michigan, when I moved to Atlanta I switched careers to public relations. I have been the public relations director for four different companies and had my own PR company for about 10 years as well. One of my most interesting jobs was as Community Manager for the Atlanta Committee For The Olympic Games. I retired early after being laid off from a natural gas marketing company. I now spend a lot of time nurturing my 150+ rose bushes and responding to post disaster animal rescue and care deployments. I worked in Louisiana and Florida after hurricanes Katrina and Rita and went back to Louisiana after hurricane Gustav. Also responded to a tornado disaster site in north Georgia and hurricane Sandy in New York. Because SS benefits are not all that much, I am back in the natural gas business and selling gas again. I have customers in Georgia and Texas and hope to have customers in Michigan and Ohio in the near future.
