Betty's Story
Workplace
My first job was a cashier at McDonald's in Kinston, NC. I left there to work as a cashier at Burger King (same town). I left there to work at Granet Glove in Snow Hill. That place went bankrupt. I then worked at the Dry Cleaners in Greenville. Left there to work at Trinity Daycare full-time and went back to work at Burger King. During this time, I was in Management Training for Burger King. The daycare fired me for not attending Sunday School (because I worked as the opener at Burger King). I got hired at the Bear Patch Daycare while I was still in training for management with Burger King. I became a Shift Manager for Burger King and moved on up to Assistant Manager. Ronald and I decided to move to Bladen County so I quit my job at Burger King then moved. That's when I became a hog farmer. I worked until I found out I was almost 4 months pregnant. I worked for Lundy Packing Company for a couple of years. Then I went to work with Murphy Family Farms. They wanted me to work as the Nursery Manager for the same pay I was already making as a regular nursery employee, so I quit. I went to a contract Murphy farm and was the Nursery Manager there during my 2nd pregnancy. When Brandon was born, he was airlifted to Duke and was on life support for the first 10 days of life. or an additional week in the NICU at New Hanover. My job fired me because I could not go back to work within a week of his birth. When Brandon could attend daycare, I went to work for Brown's as a Farrowing Department Manager. I finally got disgusted with working every other weekend. I got a job as a bookkeeper at Oakland Plantation Turf Farm. (No holidays or weekends). I worked my way up to Trucking Supervisor. I was involved in a car accident and injured my back. I was out of work for 2 1/2 weeks, so they fired me. At this time Ronald had been transferred from Bladen Correctional Facility to Greene Correctional Institution. He has been an officer there for 5 years. Since he got transferred, we moved back to Greene County where we currently reside. I had a hard time finding a good paying job. I worked for a couple weeks as a Cost Accountant for Smithfield Packing. I finally got a permanent full-time job at the Greene County Health Department as an Accounting Technician. I worked in that position for almost 2 years. While I was the accounting tech, I was attending LCC. I was taking Medical Terminology and Insurance Coding and Billing. I completed these courses at the top of my class. In February 2007 I was promoted to Administrative Assistant I and Supervisor over Billing and the the Clinical Clerical Staff.
