Workplace
I have done a few things in my lifetime as far as careers go. I dabbled in Real Estate in the 70's (and worked part-time at Mt. Baldy Lodge so I could eat.) I decided R.E. wasn't for me, so I went back to school to get an Insurance Brokers license and eventually opened up a Commerial lines Agency in Upland called H.I.S. For 18 years the Insurance business was lucretive, and I enjoyed the challenge, but all of that changed when prop 103 was passed in the late 80's. We found ourselves scrambling for markets that were bailing out of Ca. left and right in an effort to avoid paying rebate checks to consumers who had been over charged for insurance. All that remained where the direct writer companies, Allstate, Farmers, State Farm, 20th Century and a handful of others. I became a Farmers Agent in an effort to continue to service existing clients, but their insurance premiums were less competetive and also, commission structures were changing and it became harder and harder to make a decent living at it. I tossed in the towel in 1996 and went back to school.... one more time. Are you wondering if I am actually a professional student by now? I was asking myself that question.
I enrolled into the Australasian College of Herbal Studies and got certicates in herbalism, body...Expand for more
care, aromatherapy, and natural therapies. I also enrolled into Nationwide Beauty College. My objective was to obtain my Esthetics license. Once I got my state license I enrolled into the International Dermal Institute in El Segundo and took advanced Esthetics. I ended up opening a skin care clinique in Riverside in 1994. This was a great business to get into. I had wonderful clients. I thoroughly loved the line of work. I kept the doors open until divorce forced me to close the doors in 1998.
I now work for a No. Ca. organization, CIMC. I relocated to their Ukiah field office 2 years ago. An opening came up in Lakeport, which was 30 miles closer to home, so I applied. I am still working there. I had always wanted to move to Northern California and this job got me there, so it helped fulfill one of several dreams.
I am now a youth development specialist and work with kids, ages 14 to 24. It is personally rewarding because I work with generally troubled, minority kids in an effort to impact a change in their young lives that will stick with them through their adulthood.
To sum it up, I am a people person. I enjoy working with people of all ages. As I look back I guess I would say I have done more in my life than I thought I would accomplish, but on the other hand, I am just about where I hoped I would one day be, and this is a good thing. :)
