Betty's Story
Life
I have been married to Fred Hegler for 54 years. We have 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. They all live within 120 miles from Pueblo, so we are a pretty close knit family.
After high school I attended college for two years and then chose being a housewife over a business women. I did, however, eventually open a costume rental business which was called simply Betty's Costumes.
While raising children I did quite a bit of bowling even continued with competitive roller skating. After the roller rink had closed and the ice arena was open I decided to try ice skating. After the kids were grown Fred joined me in ice dancing and I tried joining him playing golf. But, believe me, golf is not my game. It was then we started ballroom dancing which led to polka dancing. ncing.
My hobbies, besides dancing, are the personal computer (I spend available hours playing games, making greeting cards, searching the internet, organizing and printing photographs, etc.), raising fresh water live bearing tropical fish,(the fish actually do it. I just pick out the babies, keep them several months and then sell them to a local pet store. I do also raise one egg laying fish.), and in the summer I enjoy a small vegetable garden.
Fred has macular degeneration and is legally blind. But he has enough peripheral vision (vision from the outer boundary of the eye) that he is able to take care of the yard, watch television from the side of the set, and it doesn't keep him from dancing or enjoying his grandchildren.
Fred and I both just try to enjoy each day while our health is basically good.
