Beverly's Story

Life What an interesting website! The message boards are fascinating. I am married, with two kids, living in sunny Phoenix. My hobbies include reading, writing short essays about life in general, photography, and helping my husband in various activities with his high school band. Right now, I am working as an academic counselor with University of Phoenix online. I think I am going to really enjoy doing this for a long time. Well, I probably won't want to remain a counselor forever, but the company is fantastic. I just finished my 2nd masters degree (Psychology) courtesy of UOP so this is a very good thing! Over the years I have been a corporate trainer for Sprint PCS and MCI, an 8th grade English teacher, an 8th grade Math teacher, a secretary, a relay operator for the deaf and hard of hearing, a recruiter, a secretary, a 6th grade teacher, an insurance agent, and a disc jockey at KATA/KFMI radio (whew!) It took a long time to figure out what I REALLY wanted to do for a living, but I sure had fun along the way. I attended the 10th reunion, and had looked forward to attending the 20th, but it just didn't work out. I look forward to hearing from any fellow Vacaville grads (and Humboldt State grads too) School I was an Air Force Brat, so we moved around a lot. My list of schools reflect this. I hated having to move so much, but now that I am older and (somewhat) wiser, I realize this wasn't such a bad thing. I became an avid reader and learned to put a lot of what I was discovering in my travels down in written form. It made me a better writer, so I am grateful for the experience of moving around. I'm not afraid of change the way some people are, so that's another positive to the whole rootless thing. The teacher I would love to see again would be Mr. Jim Duarte from 6th grade. He taught us all the countries of the world by sight and read to us from Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" out loud under the trees behind the backstop of the baseball field. College I was just 16 years old the first time I set foot onto the campus of Humboldt State. It was love at first sight and I don't regret for one moment my time spent there. I got to do things that other people only dream about doing (from bonfires to dissecting cadavers to writing poetry) If I do have any minor regrets, it's that I raced too quickly through my college years. So much is a blur now, but I remember parts of it clearly enough. I remember Howard Seemann and his class and all the red ink on my papers as he hacked them (edited them?) to death. I thank Howard every day when I have to write or edit an important letter or document or Master's paper. It's a breeze, but it sure hurt when he was bleeding all over my precious work! per and feeling rather out of place because I was so darned young in a group of much older students. That was VERY weird. I still enjoyed living amongst the redwoods and I learned so much from my time on the Northcoast. I remember living in Redwood Hall and all my friends in the dorm. I vividly recall the final episode of M*A*S*H and that every single person was crowded around the TV downstairs. I remember the parties (every Friday and Saturay night...as I tried to study in my room! Boy, was I a total geek!) Now my college experience includes both a teaching certificate and two masters degrees. I plan to go on to earn my doctorate, probably starting the process within the coming year (knock wood) Workplace If you've gotten this far, then you KNOW that I have done it ALL (just about). When I first got out of college, I had not the foggiest clue what I wanted to do with my life. So I got married. By some miracle, that marriage has lasted up to the present day and we have two energetic and wonderful kids to show for it. They are pure joy (most of the time) and they keep me young at heart. In the meantime, I have held just about any job there was to be held, including that of secretary, disc jockey, insurance agent, Math teacher (YES, Math!), relay operator for the deaf and hard of hearing (the operator who translates the calls), call center supervisor for Merrimac/Asurion and MCI, corporate training specialist for Sprint PCS, a 6th grade teacher, and now back to working in a call center. I think I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up...! Check back here in a couple of years and we'll both see if I am right. Military I'm an Air Force Brat. Dad retired out of Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. But before he retired, we lived all over the place. It was okay, but kind of lonely sometimes. Plus, my grades suffered a bit because of it. I always wanted to park myself someplace and just stay there. Didn't happen. Now that I am all grown-up, I still hope to settle down here in sunny Phoenix. Really settle down. Like PERMANENT (emphasis intentional!) I always wanted to be a deejay or a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were only about half right. I got to do both those things and had a blast doing them. In fact, my first job was at KATA/KFMI radio, where I got paid $3.35 an hour to sit in a little room and talk to myself! Those nights spent in a tiny booth, spinning records and creating interesting bits of "radio patter"...These memories are priceless. What I remember most about it are the people I worked with while I was there. Boy, were they a motley bunch! I laughed myself to death, just observing their antics most evenings.
