Beverly's Story

Our Mom, Beverly Smith Herrington passed away on May 05, 2023. I am listed in Classmates.com as having attended schools in Jacksonville FL, Albany GA and Tallahassee FL. At the age of 5, I entered elementary school (before I should have) at Arlington Elementary because my grandmother pulled a couple of strings to get me started, before turning 6 the end of October. In the second grade I went to my assigned school, Spring Park Elementary. We moved to Albany, GA Thanksgiving of 1948 while I was attending 6th grade. I thought my life had ended because I was leaving my perfect world, AND I would not be able to attend Landon High School, located right around the corner from where my grandmother, Merle P. Morton (who was in education including librarian at Landon) lived. But in hindsight, the smaller town of Albany, GA, probably opened doors for me which the larger town of Jacksonville might never have offered in my journey as a musician. After graduating from AHS, I attended FSU for one year. Was enrolled in the School of Music and pledged ADPi. Was crowned Miss Tallahassee in 1956 (singing "Mr. Wonderful"), but my mind was on a wedding. Shortly after the Miss Florida contest, I was married. Had three terrific children, who together brought 5 incredible grands into the world ... and now there is a precious great-grandson!!! I have often wondered what my life would have held, had I s...Expand for more
tayed and finished FSU ... certainly I should have. But choices map our way, and though my choice for a life's mate was not wise for either of us, I would never have changed anything that made my 3 children and 6 grands possible in my life! My life has been filled with music and I have been blessed with many gifts in that area. I have just retired after 55 years as Director of Music/Organist/Keyboard of Methodist Churches in Colorado and the Atlanta Metro. I continue to give vocal instruction. After 24 "single" years, the wonder in my life is that someone from my high school days contacted me through Classmates.com, and after a 4-year on-line friendship, we fell in love and married. Ironically, he sang in a music ensemble I directed in high school, but during that time, we never dated. I have wondered why we could not have started our happiness long ago, but having children and grands ... his and mine ... those are reason enough! So, I have to agree with the song that says, "I wouldn't change a single thing that happened ... on my way to you!!! Thank heavens there was a Classmates.com to make that possible!!! Note: In 2002, I created a website, the ALBANY HIGH TIMES (albanyhightimes.com), for my high school, representing classes from the late 1930's to 2009. The rewards have been extraordinary!!! Have also created a professional music website (bshofnote.herringtonhome.com)!
