Bill (George W. Jr.)'s Story

Life (73 YEARS OF IT SO FAR) I HAVE WRITTEN A STORY CALLED PENSACOLA FLORIDA WWII (A young Boys Perspective). It is about memories etc.. with pictures of my life and my family's life during WWII. I have also written a story about my 2 years with the USAF stationed in Izmir Turkey. (IF YOU WOULD LIKE MY WWII STORY and/or MY USAF TURKEY STORY WITH _PICTURES, then send me your email address through classmates email. It is the only way that will accept and print it). I was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL on February 2, 1936 and remember the war years pretty good, in fact I am still remembering things I did'nt mention. Some of you "older" P'Colaians might find it interesting and have some memories of your own to add. I tried to put the story here somewhere on Classmates, but nowhere would take the length about 3300 words plus photos. So if interested, please contact me either through classmates or at my personal email **** . I'll email the story to you. Pensacola was a very exciting and interesting place during "the big war" ...Now the rest of this profile is what I have already contributed. I lived in Pensacola Florida until 1953 when I moved to Tampa. In my school bio, I have related some of my time in Tampa, but in P'Cola I went to Agnes McReynolds Elementary, P.K. Younge Jr. Hi, Warrington Jr. Hi, and PHS. As time passes, I will try to add a little at a time to my bio(s)( Hey guys, in 73 years a lot of stuff happens) I met my Spouse in 1969 at Covenant College on Lookout Mtn. in Northwest Ga. I was 33 and she was 19, we've been married 39 years. It's great!!! My Pets are smarter than most humans I know, and absolutely more loyal and loving. School My Hillsborough High School, Tampa, FL Recollections (some of them anyway) Bill Adams AKA George W. Adams,Jr. I entered HHS in January 1953 as a transfer from Pensacola High School by way of St. Petersburg HS where I attended 1 semester. I was musically inclined and sang in both of the other schools Glee Clubs. The director at PHS had selected me to be one of eight to attend Florida All State Chorus in Tampa for 1953 and thanks to Steve Solak, he honored that promise and I was allowed to go as one of the Baritone/Bass members from HHS. The concert was held at the Armory and led by Roy Ringwald, the director of the Fred Waring Chorale. It was a great honor for me (and 5000 other singers from Florida High Schools). I don’t remember (y’all know how that goes) if we did “The Fortune Teller” that year or was it the next. I had finally found my niche in High School and most of my HHS life was centered in and around Glee Club, oh, I was in Future Teachers also. My other center of focus at HHS was a member of class ‘55, Mary Lou Ivey, who was also in Glee Club as well and had a tremendous Lyric Soprano voice. I met her at the cast party for “The Fortune Teller” which was held at ? (I know it was Babe Zaharias’ Golf Cub in Forest Hills). A sideline, Mary Lou dumped me after I went through basic training in the USAF. I wasn’t the only victim of a “Dear John” letter though, Stan Hobbs, (I’m almost positive it was him) got one while in Basic ...Expand for more
Training and tried to go AWOL to go home, but cooler heads prevailed and the last I heard of him, he was running a gym on some Air Base. I sang a solo for competition for the Florida Glee Club State Contest and my main competition was Hal Yohe. He also was my competition for Mary Lou as well. I worked for Hal’s mom at Dondick’s Rootbeer Drive In on Florida Ave. my first half year in Tampa, so our lives did run up against each other in many venues. I had (almost) the last laugh though, when I was almost out of Basic Training and had already received a stripe, Hal showed up at Lackland AFB in Basic Training and I outranked him by about 2 months. Hey, it seemed like a big thing at the moment. That’s the last time I saw or heard anything about Hal, but I’m told he is still in the Tampa area. My brother, Ron(nie) Adams was in the class of ‘56 and I got to spend one year with him and his buddies , which included Calvin Allen, Walter Threadgill, Charles Hadley ( who died a few years ago), Hayes Wilson, Tommy Oyler, before I left HHS to enlist in Aug 1954 in the USAF. I didn’t graduate because I had one course to complete, Senior English, and couldn’t see staying another whole year just for that. Oh, the choices we make in our youth. I got my GED as soon as I was assigned to Paine Field AFB in Everett, WA right after basic. But that’s rambling into another life story, so I know where to stop so I’ll end for now with a list of a few teachers that I can remember: Mrs. Reby-Chemistry, Mr Seivers-History, My home room teacher who taught Psychology, my English teacher who I constantly offer my apologies to, and my Spanish Teacher, who had to put up with me for TWO years. In fact it was in her class that I got called down to the auditorium with the rest of you rebels for being barefooted (I only had my loafers off for a minute). That’s enough. I enjoy writing this because it helps me remember things I thought I had forgotten, and maybe some of you can help fill in at least some of the blanks. I’ll write and send some more if you want me too. Oh.. oh.., how about the time we beat Plant HS in the Thanksgiving Game, and the time the combined Glee Clubs sang “ The Bells of St. Mary’s” at a game we also had at Tampa U. Stadium. I said I’d shut up, so now I am. God bless you and hold you in His arms as He has for sixty plus years. Bill Adams Military Aug. 1954 - Nov 1954: USAF Basic Training, Lackland AFB Flight 888 Nov.
