Here's the skinny: After graduating from Bullard, I put myself through college and graduated from Fresno State in '77 (what a grind); then went to graduate school in the deep South (what a culture shock!) If you had any misgivings about Fresno, you ain't seen nuthin' . . . Arkansas and Tennessee are much, much worse. Of course, if you love rednecks, guns, bigotry, Bible-thumping Baptists, tornadoes, dry counties, hypocrisy and pickups (oh yeah, I forgot, pickups are okay), you'd absolutely love the South. After graduate school, I immediately moved back to California and took my first career job at a small advertising agency in San Francisco where I spent three years of on-the-job training. Was then hired away by a larger ad agency in Newport Beach (Cochrane Chase, Livingston & Company) and continued my apprenticeship. Three years later I was laid off due to a merger; then took a job with a multinational advertising agency (NW Ayer) in their Los Angeles office. In '91, when the economy went south, I was laid-off (again) from NW Ayer and started my own business as an independent project manager (out of necessity, not design). For three years I assisted agencies of all sizes in LA and Orange County with market research, business development and project management until I accepted a staff gig with Poppe Tyson/LA in '94.
