Mary's Story

Life Hi All, I've checked the classmates list for a couple of years and as there are now quite a few listings for fondly remembered, 'good old South' friends and acquaintances, I decided to treat myself to a gold membership, and perhaps re-connect with some of you. I loved my school years and often think our generation was particularly fortunate. Most of us had two parents present, often a mom who was able to stay home most of the time and who actually baked cookies. My siblings and I would spend countless summer days playing baseball---only checking in for meals. We could also stay out until after dark playing hide and seek, without triggering panic in our parents. The neighbourhood watched out for all of us. Sounds idyllic, doesn't it? After graduation in 1959, (I was the very proud class valedictorian), I went to UBC for three years. I regret I didn't complete my degree, but did what was so common then---got married instead. So, before I enter my dotage, (due in the next week or so), let me recount some of my life adventures to date. I have two kids, of whom I'm very proud. My son and his wife have a three year old daughter. My daughter and husband have three boys,13,9 and 20 months. When I first became a grandma, I was amazed by how it captured me completely. The kids are beautiful, intelligent, loving---etc.etc.!! But they reall...Expand for more
y are!! OK, all you other grandparents, admit it! You're probably similarly goofy about yours. My husband of almost 32 years, died nearly eleven years ago. I worked in the jewellery business, which I loved, for a long time and managed stores. Because retail hours became so extended, I chose to leave that. No Sundays or holidays for me! I then worked for a financial institution for ten years, before deciding to retire three years ago. I'm a real 'people person' and greatly missed the daily interaction with customers and co-workers----but not enough to return. I travel quite a lot now, whenever possible. France and England, in particular, give me endless delight. I've stayed in a house because I'm nuts about gardening. Must admit that my vision much exceeds my actual accomplishment. I take quite a few courses of wildly varying content and enjoy them immensely. I'd love to go on an archeological 'dig'. I've always liked politics, and am active in a local constituency association. The endless machinations of the process fascinate me. My first project for this year was to enroll in an internet genealogy course and it's SO interesting. Now I understand how it becomes a life long passion for many people. I have a 'must do and see' list which continues to grow. I'll see what life deals me---it all looks pretty positive. Cheers, Mary
