Bill's Story
Dec 2023: Still living in Loreto, Baja Sur, now 20 years (not including our 2 year Oregon break) as a Resident of Mexico. I feel very lucky to have found Mexico as a home... the people are incredibly warm and genuine, the weather is perfect (except hurricane season), lots of places for our dogs to run free on the beach, mountains, desert... for a person who loves the outdoors it is paradise. I built my last custom home, finished in July '23... I'll keep building spec homes (great way to make a living), and I'm still doing consulting gigs with Project Management Advisors (PMA... currently finishing the Raffles Hotel Boston). 66 years old now, ouch, but still healthy and happy, still kicking strong.
Jan 2018: We are back living in Loreto again... loved Oregon, but Loreto has become home. I was offered a couple of projects to build (custom homes), sufficiently lucrative to keep us comfy. Back to playing guitar... we sold the boat, so my new adventure is kayak-spearfishing... wild good fun!
Sept 2015 Update: Massive Change. After 10 years living full time way down in Baja, we decided it was time for the next adventure. As we planned our getaway, we considered Asheville,NC... Austin,TX... both Memphis and Nashville,TN... and 1/2 dozen other interesting cities. The place that won out is Bend, Oregon. We made the move in September, not having any job or income source or anyplace to live... we brought our 5th wheel for temporary quarters ("Wander Dawg", the same 5th wheel we hauled around the continent for year in 2004-5)... now fully winterized and prepared for our first cold winter ever.
I landed a great position with the best General Contractor in Central Oregon on my first interview, re-starting my previous AAA-Big Construction life. I like building big! My wife is now a full time member of the Everyday-Is-Saturday club and loving it. Bend has 32 micro-breweries, 6 distilleries, 5 hard cider houses, endless great restaurants and bars, a vibrant and continuous series of cultural events (concerts, plays, hikes, etc), Mt. Bachelor for skiing, the Deschutes River for white water rafting, the High Cascades for exploring... What's not to love?

Feb 2015 Update: I turn 58 years old today, reminiscing. Yikes. Still living in Loreto and enjoying life here, now speaking Spanish fluently. Both our Construction and Property Management businesses have survived the economic collapse that started in 2009, finally having a good year again. Sadly, both my Mom and Dad have passed away in the last 18 months...they both made it to 90, lived great lives.... the aftermath with my 4 sisters has not been pleasant... how many families blow up when truly good parents die? I miss Mom & Dad every day, and I miss my connection to Lompoc. We were all lucky to have spent for...Expand for more
mative years in such a nice little town. Still enjoying good health, still playing guitar and singing daily, even performing a bit... music has really changed my life... never knew there was an artist inside this crusty hull! We are seriously thinking about closing our businesses and moving on to a new adventure... we don't have many left in us, want to take advantage while we can... Chile and Argentina, anyone? Or perhaps Spain?
May 2012 Update: I have been living in Loreto, Baja Sur, Mexico for 7 years now. Quite a change from my Type-AAA existence up the US. I have learned that "siesta" is a very civilized tradition. Still working, but not so hard any more. Not ready for retirement, but let's just say it is a good thing I own my own business... any boss would have fired me long ago. I am now more interested in my time in the Sea of Cortez, spearfishing, freediving and swimming... also playing guitar going on 3 years, has proven very good for the old Gray Matter and provides a new spiritual focus (very meditative).
Moving from San Diego to this little town of Loreto has been a real life changer. My wife and I made more friends here in our first 6 months than in the previous 30 years up in the US. It is quiet, peaceful, safe... authentic Mexico at it's best. The people in general, both Mexican and Expat, are the warmest and nicest group I have ever met. Living here is Paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors. The cost of living is MUCH less than in the US, while the quality of life is MUCH higher... not such a bad place to have landed.
I feel fortunate of having lived a life of variety and passion, and for having lived to settle into a more stable and happy time, and especially for still having good health. I wish the same & better for all of my old Classmates and friends.
Previous Lives: Left Lompoc and joined the US Navy at 17 years old in 1974... 5 years school & traveling in the Navy, then 3 years at Cal Poly SLO majoring in Industrial Engineering (didn't graduate)... followed by a series of businesses and industries, I had fun dabbling in a lot of different occupations... finally went back to finish my degree in Construction Engineering, graduated in 1995. A a real Late Bloomer, I've been in Construction since. Worked as Superintendent and Project Manager on many big and interesting jobs in the Southwest, mostly in San Diego building biotech research labs and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities until 2004. At 47 years old, took a year off, my wife and I traveled all around the continent for a year living in a 5th wheel RV... that was a GREAT year. In 2005, I was hired to run an 8,000 home residential development in Loreto, Baja Sur, Mexico... the company that hired me was terrible and I left them after 6 months, but we love Loreto and we have been here since, starting and building 2 businesses and many good friendships.
