Bill's Story

WARNING: DO NOT READ MY "STORY" FOR I HAVE BEEN DUBBED AS DEPLORABLE BY HRC ... I AM ONE OF THE 47%! It's been a long journey! Worked 20 years with JCPenney [MO KS OK NM] and 15 years with Wal-Mart (MO & OK). What brought me to Duncan OK was a job as a Boy Scout executive. Didn't like the job [although as a volunteer it was great]! In NM I was an assistant scoutmaster with focus on camping activities and rank advancement. Favorite teaching merit badge was Railroading. While managing a store in Silver City, I was an avid camper [primitive style] and raised a family consisting of 3 stepdaughters and my son. Copper mines failed and so did the economy. Lost my job and returned to OKC where I worked in a pawn shop [very interesting]. Then landed the job that took me to Duncan. Loved the community and stayed, taking a lesser position with Wal-Mart as a Department Manager over the Men's Area. With my knowledge of Retailing, I did quite well with Wal-Mart, winning several awards and bonuses. Stayed with them until I took early retirement at age 62. Other pastimes have included chess, photography, rocketry, games of strategy, model railroading [N Scale], collecting music from 1962 to 1969 and quite a bit of the 70's. Building a favorite DVD collection. And I have dabbled with writing prose [well over 300 pieces]. Interest in slot-car racing and model landscaping. Next big project: editing my five books of prose and reconstructing my will as I prepare for the final days! Didn't do much in High School ... just coasted through. Went to KU to major in Aerospace Engineering and almost flunked out! Wasn't prepared for the change and I was too occupied as president of a pledge class. Changed to Central Missouri State (1969 graduate) and majored in Business and minored in Computer Programming. Hired on with JCPenney with first few jobs at Ward Parkway, Troost Avenue and Metro North stores in Kansas City. Went into the store management program and went to Independence, KS for training. Managed stores included Anthony, KS; El Reno OK and Silver City, NM. Old High School flame: Doretta Bowers. Best friend in Grandview: Ron Tate. Favorite female singer: Chrissie Hynde and male singer: Neil Young. Favorite band(s): New Riders of the Purple Sage; The Byrds, Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Doors, The Seeds, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Electric Light Orchestra, The Moody Blues, Uriah Heep and Tyrannosaurus Rex [T Rex]. Favorite movie (musical): Xanadu, Grease 2, Blue Velvet (kinky!) & West Side Story. Overall, I like a good Sci-Fy and Western. A favorite (inspirational) song: In Dreams [by Roy Orbison] Also: Sweet Jane, Paint It Black, It's The Same Old Song, Opus 17, LA Woman, From The Sun To The World A favorite movie: Blue Velvet [which contains the song In Dreams]. Also: Dune, Southern Comfort, A Beautiful Mind & American Beauty Favorite Books in HS: James Bond series & Dune All-Time Favorite Books: Catcher In The Rye, Crime & Punishment, Ball Four Favorite TV Show Then: Candid Camera; Now: Big Bang Theory Most Worn Out Vinyl Record: Isle Of View by Jimmy Spherris First Car: Dodge Dart; Latest: Cadillac; Worst: Plymouth Cricket (Caught on Fire!) Of course [back then]; guys were drafted ... I was no exception! Went to Ft. Leonardwood. They let me ...Expand for more
finish college but was drafted 1 month after first marriage. Did not sign up for an extension; so; I skipped AIT and went to Ft Riley, KS as a computer programmer and ended up as a clerk typist. Was fortunate and spent my remaining time at Ft. Riley. Was instrumental in developing the Orders Section, replacing their old system which included computer programmers! I was released in 1971 and went back to my job of 3 months [JCPenney]. I'm sure I've left out a lot; but, that just about covers my life from High School to now, with a lot of successes and failures left out. Best Friends were Wally Walkenhorst & Dale Stafford (62) and (64) Ronald Tate, Philip Sprague, Dennis Thompson & (66) Doretta Bowers. Peer that helped me the most (Physics): Roger Gemeinhardt Most Admired (Brainiac): Jill Ackerson; First genuine crush: Glenna Johnson; Jr. High Crush: Nancy Jenkins Rebound dates: Gail Gregory (65) & Julie O'Connor (64); I would of like to have known Jill; but, I was humbled by her intelligence! Best Life Success Story: Joyce Postel (64) Most Influential Person: Doretta Bowers ('66): because of my competitive nature, she caused my grades to improve and my confidence level (initially) to grow. Favorite Teachers: Mrs. Manning;and Jane Bryan; Nightmare Teacher (Jr Hi): Mrs. Craddock Favorite Colors: Dark Green, Brown and Black Most Influential Band in HS: The Kinks Favorite Song (HS): Walk Away Renee (The Left Banke) (Now): Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones) Coolest Cheerleader: Jane Hennon (62) Favorite HS Sports: Tennis; Baseball; Golf, Bowling, Swimming and playing chess (sport?) High School Summer Job (63&64): Western Electric (Merriam, KS) Biggest Achievement: Living beyond the Ouija Board's prediction given me at age 12 (prediction: age 67) 2nd Biggest Achievement: Succeeding beyond my expected potential (late bloomer). Major Career Achievements: Businessman of the Year (Silver City, NM) and President's Cup Winner with largest store profit improvement for the Region (Anthony, KS ... JCPenney). Most awkward moment in High School: Was graduation ... I sat over a discarded prophylactic that had everyone around me in hysterics and leaving me embarrassed to no end! Later in life I deemed it a sign that I would be protected ... I called it my "circle of protection"! Best Nick-name Ever: The Electric Frog! "GE" on the end of Frogge stands for general electric; thus, Electric Frog Freshman Football: AKA Ferocious Frogge ... it was a sarcastic application ... but it sounded good! Realization: Greatest human attribute is Thought; but, the greatest freedom is the ability to express that Thought! Greatest Attribute from High School ... Being a Bulldog! 7/7/16: Just had my yearly exam: I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR. Very fortunate that I did not have chemo or radiation ... surgery was all that was needed! Update 7/6/17: Cancer free ... no more A-Hole exam till 2020 ... if I am still alive! Take a look at my photo albums ...very entertaining MAKE AMERICA GREAT! CAPITALISM WORKS! I have become bored with Classmates and have been away for a while; but, because of the number of visitors, I am compelled to add a thought now and then; so, I present a different view (Whores of the Circus) and dedicate it to Rose McGowan! Still Kickin' 05-01-2022
