Dr. Bill's Story
Alive and well and living in Chappaqua, Westchester County, N.Y. where I also maintain a private practice in Clinical Psychology. Married in 1989 and have two daughters. My youngest attended Boston University. She completed a Harvard internship in the ER at a hospital in Boston and now attends New York Medical College in a Basic Medical Sciences. My older daughter just graduated from Hofstra Law and just passed the NY Bar.
After finally graduating from Hicksville High (Yes, I did graguate) I earned an A.A. in Psychology/Philosophy at Nassau Community College in 1973. My B.A. was in Psychology/Philosophy from Adelphi University in 1975. In 1982 I finished my Ph.D. in Applied Psychological Research and Program Evaluation at Hofstra University. I then completed a Post-doctoral Diploma in Clinical Psychology at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University in 1984.
Currently I am the Chair of the Psychology Department and Associate Professor of Psychology and Mental Health Counseling at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury. My clinical and research interests are in Forensic Psychology and in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of addiction, depression and anxiety disorders. I mana consulting clinical psychologist at HorseAbility in Old Westbury and I am currently on the Board of Directors and past Vice President of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, NCADD Westchester, Inc.
I am an avid skier, horseman, runner, amateur photographer and very amateur guitarist. I am an active educator. It is education that makes the world real for us. Without all of the sciences, math and literature the world is a more confusing and frightening place and we are more susceptible to manipulation and control. I am committed to promoting social justice especially in educational settings. I work to advance and disseminate knowledge in the areas of addiction and recovery and to challenge the stigma associated with people in recovery from alcoholism and other drug and behavioral addictions. I enjoy being outdoors and I am passionate about skiing, horses and live music!
My interests have always been organized around people and understanding how we become who we are and how to be who we are in a world that often pushes us to be someone or something else. Living a life is a creative process. I see creative expression as a way of "being", discharging and creating energy, and connecting with others on a deeper level. I am interested in the relationships between impulse and inhibition, control and passivity, and the "I" and the "Thou": the one and the many or the individual and the community and how we fit in. I work at finding true engagement, excitement, peace and happiness accepting life on life's terms.
I love music, poetry and literature, good Italian food and sushi. I love hiking/skiing in the Green mountains of Vermont, the Colorado Rockies and the Grand Tetons (going to any of the National Parks), hanging out by the ocean, Cape Cod, Montalk, Sanibel Island and San Francisco.
Music has always been important to me. I like all genres but rock n' roll captivated me as a very small child when I first heard Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Big Joe Turner and again when I saw The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Artists/social activists such as Pete Seager, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkle, Dono...Expand for more
van and Joan Baez helped to solidify the role of music as a social instrument. I also especially like Texas style Blues, SRV, anything by Hendrix and all of the British blues/rock guitarists. The first concert I ever attended was The Doors at the Fillmore East. I have been fortunate to have seen Hendrix, Dylan, The Who, The Kinks, Traffic, John Mayall and Janis Joplin many times. Recent shows include BB King, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Counting Crows, Dave Mason, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Los Lobos, John Hammond, Goo Goo Dolls, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton, Tinsley Ellis, Govt. Mule, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Van "The Man" Morrisson, Robert Randolf and, Bruce. I also love the old songs by all of the great soul artists including James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cook, Wilson Picket, Al Green, The Temptations, Four Tops, Otis Redding, Aretha, Mavin Gaye, Sam and Dave, Etta James and Curtis Mayfield. I have always enjoyed the music of Wess Montgomery, John Scofield, John McLaughlin, and the jazz influence heard in artists such as Traffic, the Doors and Peter Frampton.
My favorite Books include:
Being and Nothingness - Sartre
Man and His Search for Meaning - Frankl
Civilization and It's Discontents, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life and The Interpretation of Dreams - Freud
Gestalt Therapy - Perls, Hefferline and Goodman
Hungers and Compulsions - Petrucelli and Stuart
The Heart of Addiction - Dodes
Theaters of the Mind: Illusion and Truth on the Psychoanalytic Stage and, The Many Faces of Eros: A Psychoanalytic Exploration of Human Sexuality by McDougall
Som of my favorite quotations include:
"He who is not busy being born is busy dying." Dylan
"I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood" - Benjamin, Caldwell and Marcus.
"If you think education is expensive try stupidity"
"When you change the way that you look at things, the things that you are looking at change." Dyer
"How old would you be if you did not know how old you are?" Wright
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
"You must be the change that you wish to see in the world." Ghandi
As a Clinical Psychologist I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, alcoholism and other drug and behavioral addictions particularly in creative people such as musicians, dancers, writers, actors and other artists. I believe that our experience of meaningfulness and purpose is central to our self view and happiness. And, that to be truly happy and actualized one must "be" oneself in the world.
As a survivor of the 60's and 70's I am interested in all forms of addiction and other strategies that people employ to not "be" and cope with life's pain and suffering.
I never lost my love of music and the values of the sixties. Always love to hear from old friends.
