Bill's Story

Updated 09/04/2023 Life… . Am I right…? It has a way of evening us all out in the end, doesn’t it? Sometimes comically so along our personal journeys. Take me, for example. The stories I could tell… I can’t share too many stories here though or I’ll be looking around for a couch to sleep on. I’ll leave those stories for our next reunion. By the way, the 2023 reunion was WAY more fun than I ever could have hoped for, honest! Show up for the next one and I’ll buy you a drink (at least one) and we can swap tall tales — or message me through Classmates.com, or both. I am now fully retired (after a couple early, weak attempts) from what developed into an Information Technology career to include some data center operations, programming, web applications development, some software engineering and testing, database management, project management, a couple supervisory roles, and technical writing over a variety of companies. Obviously, I lacked focus. I seem to lack focus in retirement, too. I start new projects before I’ve finished the old ones. I’ve even done remodels around old projects that weren’t even finished — new projects that wiped out unfinished projects. It’s exhausting. And, in between the complete and incomplete projects, I’ve been working on my first novel for about five years now with at least as many restarts. Fingers crossed, I’ll finally finish it by the spring of 2024! My two daughters are well into their 40s and already complaining about getting old. Man, could we give ‘em an earful, huh? But both are probably better at acting their respective ages than I was, or am. My level of maturity sometimes seems mired somewhere around junior high school. Megan is (again) at ‘The St...Expand for more
ranger,’ one of the first writers to author a cookbook on specialty cupcakes, doing some freelancing, and living in Seattle with her husband and our third grandchild, Johnny Waffles, a beautiful boy beagle. Compared to me at this age, she’s on fire! Katie is at a local power company, and if she had more brains than her old man, she’d stay there until she retires. But true to the Seling name, she’s finishing her Masters of Ed. and looking to get into teaching at some point, like her mom, Sue. She is married to Peter who is a teacher in Seattle and they have two brilliant, blonde sons, my grandbabies: Oliver & Dylan. Both are baseball fanatics and into music, guitars, drums and such like their dad, who also is in a band in his spare time. She, too, is well ahead of where I was at her age. Sue graduated Magna Cum Laude from WWU, managing a 4.0 for their education program, and earned her Masters at someplace that fails me right now, because let’s face it, I’m getting old and forgetful. She scored honors there, too, however. She’s still teaching 3rd grade in Lake Stevens and they’ll probably have to duct tape her to chair and roll her out of there to get her to retire. I'm still in Lake Stevens surrounded by all my projects. I’ve lived here WAY longer than I lived in Everett, but I still consider myself an Everett boy and root for Everett High’s football team whenever I can. At least I still have my hair — now turning a lovely shade of silver. I still look like a teddy-bear, and I'm still not good at golf. I'm still threatening to play guitar and piano, still love rock music (old and new) and still love road trips. I hope life has been good to you and all is well. Write when you can. --Bill
