Bill's Story

Hello all you tigers and tigresses. It's been a while, hasn't it? It seems like a lifetime since graduation and sadly, for some it has been. Don Sawicki and Alan Rawlyk immediately come to mind – both teammates in football and baseball. Alan was an excellent catcher in baseball and a hard-running fullback in football. When you needed a few tough yards, it was Alan with his low centre of gravity and high charging knees that could always get them. And Don was a sure-handed end in football, a solid defenseman in hockey, and the hardest throwing pitcher of his era, bar none. Both were tough – Westfort tough. May they rest in peace. I’m happy to say that I’m still here although I have lost some of the spring in my step. As I was approaching my 48th birthday, I went out for my normal run and mysteriously fell down – over and over again. It signaled the end of my running days and a near brush with joining my teammates, not once but twice. I wrote a book about it, a critically acclaimed memoire covering 8 years of my life – from the time that I ran my 5th and final marathon in October of 1996 to a point where I could no longer walk at all. Then, working my way back to walking with a walker, then crutches, then to a cane and then finally to walking free of all walking aids, something I call in the book “walking with no hands” in May of 2004. ook is called “Acceptance Is Not Surrender”. As I say on the back cover. It’s not only a story about my own personal struggle, “…It’s about redefining oneself after a crippling disease by living the ups and downs of self discovery”. It’s also very much about my family. “It’s about perseverance, not only for the survivor but also for those closest to him. It’s about relationships and what loss does to test their strength and elasticity...” The main reason I wrote the book is because as I was trying to pull myself from the deep crevasse into which I had fallen, I could find nothing written by anyone, who like me, had paid for their survival with some sort of physical loss. I was desperate to find anything that I could use or adapt to make it work for me. Being the stubborn Westforter that I am, I swore that if I ever got through this, I’d write a book for others, like me, who went looking for answers and couldn’t find them. My intent was not to write a manifesto for others to follow but to offer readers the hope that my answers may lead them to theirs. “Acceptance Is Not Surrender” is available at my two favourite bookstores, Fireweed at 182 South Algoma St. and Indigo at 797 Memorial Avenue in Thunder Bay. Or, you could buy one from me, and if you wanted, I'd be happy to sign it for you. Stay well in these strange times we find ourselves.
