William 's Story

Life: I was born in Floresville, Wilson Co., Texas. At that time my family lived in the nearby farming/ranching community of Fairview. My father was from Fairview, Texas and my mother was a war bride from Belfast, Northern Ireland. I started my schooling at Floresville Elementary which I attended through the middle of the second grade. We then moved to San Antonio, where my father went to work for Kelly Air Force base as a electrical engineer. In San Antonio I went to Highland Hills Elem. for the completion of the second grade and then to Kate Schenck Elem. By the end of the third grade my father was hired by General Electric as a field engineer. From the third through the ninth grade, I changed schools twelve times as we traveled around the country. During this time my schooling included Sunset Elem., Amarillo, TX; a Navajo Indian Reservation School, near Gallup, NM; an elementary school in Sweetwater, TX; Glendale Elem., Phoenix, AZ; Hotwells Jr. High, San Antonio, TX; an elementary school (8th grade) in Pacifica, CA; Pacific Heights Elementary school, San Francisco, CA; Glendale High, Phoenix, AZ; Mount Healthy High, Cincinnati, OH; and John Marshall High, San Antonio, TX. In San Antonio my father was assigned to Southwest Research Institute. Here SWRI offered my father a position over the Computer Dept and was later assigned to Nuclear Physics Dept. In San Antonio, I finished out my high school years and then went on to San Antonio Junior College for the next two years. I then joined the US Navy for six years in naval ordnance working on guided missiles systems. After completing my military service in 1974, I married my current wife in South Carolina. We have two wonderful children and two grandchildren. School: Attended three different high schools - I started out in Glendale High in Phoenix, AZ; then Mt Healthy High in Cincinnati, OH; and finally John Marshall High in San Antonio, TX. Military: Cold War and Vietnam War Veteran. For the first two years I attended USC at Aiken, SC and then moved to the main campus in Columbia, SC to finished my under graduate degree. I Graduated From the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) in 1978. Workplace: After graduating from USC, I went to work for PPG Industries - FiberGlass Products / Fiberglass Tire Cord Division, in Shelby NC, as a Production/ Electrical Engineer. Later worked for Johnson & Johnson Medical Products / Ethicon Div., in Cornelia GA, as a Project Engineer & Maintenance Engineer/ Equipment Design Engineer/ Calibration Lab Manager/ Site Instrument Officer and finally as a Senior Engineer and Department Section Leader of Compliance Engineering.
