William's Story

See final paragraph for recent update! After thirty-nine years in the classroom--twenty-seven teaching ESOL--I retired from full-time teaching. My wife & I have been to Germany a fourteen times; I'm fairly fluent and my wife, having taught German for 35 years, is usually taken for a native in Deutschland. We led five groups of exchange students for one-month each at the Geschwister-Scholl Schule in Tuebingen (just south of Stuttgart). The faculty there helped us wrestle many of the same education issues that we face in the U.S. I taught ESOL part-time to Spanish-speaking ESOL instructors at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico's language branch in downtown San Antonio, TX. (My novel about an exchange student continues to languish in a zip drive.) But, having worked three years at a local credit union, I found that really enjoyed the teaching much more. From 2009-11, I worked with retired Army colonel, John Eric Olsen, a WWII veteran who privately published his book about the Philippine Army on Bataan. I edited a new edition, preparing it for publication by Indiana University Press (verifiying quotes, adding footnotes, and clarifying some of the military jargon so that it will be more useful to historians in future). The colonel died before authorizing money for an index, so it too sits in a zip drive. I also taught ESOL and proclamation to seminarians at the Mexican American Catholic College. After more study, they will become bilingual priests. Got re-acquainted with the TOEFL--a most challe...Expand for more
nging exam--to help foreign students score higher and get into U.S. universities. Currently repairing, painting and landscaping two houses to sell them and move to the DFW area where our three offspring live with their families. Had seven great grand children at last count. I can name them all in order or a good mind day! Hey, classmates: Post some pictures and write a bit about yourselves. Don't let me be the wordiest Classmate of all time. Your name alone doesn't always bring up a face or a memory, and heaven knows my ol' memory needs all the jogging it can get! Update in September 2012: I taught General English for the Defense Dept. at the local Air Force base. Many of the foreign students will be pilots or aircraft maintenance mechanics, but a few will teach ESL in their own countries. Then that contract ended, and I became the MUGG (mechanics, usage, grammar Guru) at an annex where I tutored men on the brink of passing their ECL assessment. That program was moved to a base way north of Big D, so I was put out to pasture on 1 September 2016. Now (in 2021) using Zoom to teach EFL to three siblings in North Africa so that they will do okay here in TX after this pandemic has been conquered. Robert's Rules! Jesus Reigns! 2020 update: Using Zoom to teach English. Three siblings in Africa are my students. Unrest in Ethiopian capital has caused internet shutdown, so I await outcome of August elections when I hope to resumes lessons. Pray for Africa and the world gone mad with virus fears!
