Billy's Story

School I moved to Brookside and started 7th grade in Jan. Had many fond memories of the people at that school, from Coach Robert B. Sanford to many of my classmates. Dinnis Kerr, Kenneth & Terrell Harris , the Von Hagles, Bernard and Budgie, and the guys from Cardiff. Joanna Salotski, Francis Slovenski and many others from Brookside Jr. High. From Minor High School, three very good years. Played some football, and baseball. Played a lot of summer baseball. I was married in April '63 and joined the Army in Oct. '63. Military After High School at Minor High School, Minor Alabama, I volentered for the U S Army. Even though we were entering some bad times, I hought the Armywas best for me. I went to Fort Jactson SC for basic training, but after a week there, we were moved to Ft. Gordon GA. After basic I went to Regansburg Germany, with duty in Passau Germany for about 6 months, then to Regansburg til 1965 when the 11TH ACR was rotated home to go to a new place called Vietnam. I I was transfered to a unit at 7th Army Hqts., Stuttgart. Then I rotated home with ...Expand for more
assignment to 4th US Army Reserve Comand, Birmingham, Al. I was there until Jan. '66. Then to Ft Benning for training for deplayment to Vietnam. Arriver there in Aug.'66, left there in Nov '67. Rotated to Germany again, Kaislautern (K-Town). Trans Co. Left K-Town in Aug. '70 to Cp Casey, Korea. 1/32nd Inf. One of my best assignments. My Bn Cmdr was LTC COLIN POWELL. Very good man. Knew he was going places. Went to school at Ft Belvoir for 6 months, then to Ft. Gordon for two years. An Engineer unit. Then to Hawaii for 5 years. Assigned to B Co, 84th Eng. Unit went to Samoa and to a small Atoll in the SW Pacific caled ENIWETOC. Large cleanup project from Atomic Testing in the 50's.The Best Job In My Army Career. Then to a couple years at Ft. Carson, CO. Not the best of assignments for me. Then to Korea again, to the 44th Engr. Bn, at Cp. Mercer. Between Kempo and Inchon. Very good unit withreal worlk mission, My 2nd best assignment. Then to Ft. Lewis WA. Here for about 3 years and made a decision to retire. 1 Feb. 1986 I retired from the US Army.
