blank's Story

Life My life since graduation has been nothing like I expected. I got married in Dec. 1976 to the guy who was supposed to be the best man. He was in the Army and our first home together was in a hole of an apartment in Ascahffenburg, Germany. Living there was like stepping back in time. In Feb. 1978 our daughter Katie was born. After our tour ended there we were stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO where our second daughter, Mary was born in Dec. 1979. We spent one more tour in Aschaffenburg and things turned sour. I packed up the girls, returned to the states, and we ended up living with my Mom and Dad for the next 16 years! Thanks to my supportive parents, I was able to raise my girls in Webster Groves and they also graduated from Webster (1996 & 1998). Most of my work career has been working for the courts, however I did venture away from the legal world for a few years to spend time working with animals. I am now working for the St. Louis County Municipal Court(in Chesterfield). Any spare time I have is spent with family; my husband, my two beautiful daughters, my two son-in-laws, my two precious grandkids, and my parents. It is now my turn to be the caretaker and return the favor to my parents. Both have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and are slowly losing touch with the world around them. So we just try to hang on to as much as we can, spend as much time together as we can, and take one day at a time. School What can I say about my school years? It was like having a job that I hated but was forced to go to day after day! My saving grace came while I attended Steger Junior High School and heard about a group called "Explorers". After attending the first meeting I knew it was for me! When I joined it was a group of about 5 girls and 7 boys, plus a couple of adult advisors. We were one of the first coed Boyscout Explorer Posts in Missouri. We quickly grew and at one point had over 100 members in our Post. From 1972 until I left for Germany in 1977 I was an active member and had many wonderful experiences. I met countless people who all touched my life in different ways. Maybe it was the person I helped serve coffee to at a rest stop on Labor Day or the man who told us the story of how the "hush puppy" got its name on our trip to Shiloh. I always looked forward to our Wednesday night meetings and planning our next adventure. School may have taught me my ABC's & how to add and subtract, but Explorer Post 544 taught me about life. pleasant one. On May 5, 1992 I worked in the Criminal/Traffic Department of the St. Louis County Courthouse in Clayton. The day started like any other day there. I had gone down the hall to look for a file when I heard a loud bang. They were doing some construction in the building so I thought that was where the noise came from. That bang was followed by another and another and another. It was then I realized it was gunshots I was hearing, coming from the courtroom across the hall. People began to scramble. Some jumped over counters to hide, others hid under desks, in bathrooms, or where ever they could shield themselves. No one knew for sure what was happening. I quickly hid under a counter and pulled a chair in front of me to hide. I looked to my right and saw another frightened woman who had been at the courthouse to pay a ticket. It seemed like forever that we huddled under the counter. I kept expecting to see a terrorist come flying in the office with an assault rifle. When the shooting finally stopped we began to slowly get up and as I looked out our office window to the courtyard I saw police officers hidden behind concrete barriers with guns drawn and pointed towards us. My thoughts then went to my coworkers down the hall. I carefully looked out the door and when I saw it was clear I began to make my way down the hall to my office. As I entered the room, it appeared empty and I began to call out names. I looked across the office and saw my manager's door closed. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. Again I called out names and announced it was me. The door slowly opened to reveal a room full of frightened women. My coworkers were safe, but it was mass confusion. After what seemed like an eternity, a police officer finally came and told us they were evacuating our floor and we were to follow him. As we were escorted towards the escalator I observed numerous bullet holes in the walls and one bullet that had lodged in our office door. As I rounded the corner to step on the escalator, there lay Kenneth Baumruk, a pool of blood around his head. He had been in court for his divorce hearing. The first loud bang I had heard was him shooting his wife, killing her. He also shot her attorney, his attorney, a bailiff, and continued to fire his gun as he methodically made his way around the back corridor of the second floor. He was finally shot by a police officer that was in traffic court waiting to testify in a trial. That experience changed my life and it is a day I will never forget.
