Barry's Story
Raised in Sterling until our family moved to Overland Park in 68 then Wichita in 1971. I attended Southeast and graduated in '74. I went to KU, married Alice Russell (SE '75) in 76, graduated in 78, graduated KU Medical School in 81, pediatric residency in Wichita until 84, neonatal fellowship at UC San Diego and returned to Wichita to practice at Wesley in the Newborn ICU. We have 5 children, ages 34,33,31,29 and 17 and seven grandchildren, one step grandson. Alice was the full time business manager for the practice for 10 years and then retired to finish rasing the older group of kids and to enjoy our youngest. I have been the Medical Director of the NICU at Wesley since 1989, developed the QI department for Pediatrix a national group practice and served as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at KU School of Medicine in Wichita from 2008-2013. I am still active in practice and research. The most interesting projects in the 80s and 90s were rel...Expand for more
ated to the introduction and optimal management of surfactant therapy which helps the newborns breathe easier. Later work was with multi center quality improvement for the NICUs in our network. Most recently, I spent lots of time assisting in the design or infection prevention studies, which failed to show any benefit of antibody supplementation. My current involvement is in support of several studies related to appropriate dosing of medications in the neonate.
Update 2024

Family
Our second daughter passed away in 2019. We have added 3 great grand children and have one more on the way. Some great travel experiences as I have slowed down, including visiting Israel before the current conflict.
Hope to see friends at the 50th reunion.
