Bob's Story
Graduated from KHS in 1963 and started college at Cape Girardeau, Mo, the following September. Graduated four years later with a B. S. In Education and flew to Newport, Rhode Island, in August of 1967 where I attended four months of Naval Officer Candidate School. Was commissioned an Ensign at graduation and flew to Philadelphia, Pa, where I reported for duty as Asst. Oceanographic Officer aboard the USS SAN PABLO. Our ship performed oceanographic operations in the Gulf of Mexico for about a year. Qualified as Junior Officer of the Deck and was on the bridge during routine operations. Was promoted to Oceanographic Officer before the ship was decommissioned in May of 1969. Was then transferred to the USS OBSERVATION ISLAND home ported in Cape Kennedy, Fla, where I was assigned as Telemetry Officer involved in Poseidon submarine and NASA launchings. Our ship monitored the first Apollo moon launching and landing with astronauts Armstrong, Aldren, and Collins. After discharge from active duty, I continued serving in the naval reserve and was trained as a nuclear weapons instructor. I served for twenty more years eventually retiring as a navy Captain. God bless them all.
