Bob's Story

Graduated from KHS in 1963 and started college at Cape Girardeau, Mo, the following September. Graduated four years later with a B. S. In Education and flew to Newport, Rhode Island, in August of 1967 where I attended four months of Naval Officer Candidate School. Was commissioned an Ensign at graduation and flew to Philadelphia, Pa, where I reported for duty as Asst. Oceanographic Officer aboard the USS SAN PABLO. Our ship performed oceanographic operations in the Gulf of Mexico for about a year. Qualified as Junior Officer of the Deck and was on the bridge during routine operations. Was promoted to Oceanographic Officer before the ship was decommissioned in May of 1969. Was then transferred to the USS OBSERVATION ISLAND home ported in Cape Kennedy, Fla, where I was assigned as Telemetry Officer involved in Poseidon submarine and NASA launchings. Our ship monitored the first Apollo moon launching and landing with astronauts Armstrong, Aldren, and Collins. After discharge from active duty, I continued serving in the naval reserve and was trained as a nuclear weapons instructor. I served for twenty more years eventually retiring as a navy Captain. Served eighteen years as Executive Vice President of Claim Operations and the last five years as President and CEO. Worked with Governor Rick Perry and Speaker of the House Tom Craddick in achieving medical liability tort reform for health care providers in 2003. Retired from TMLT in 2011, built a new home in Georgetown, Tx. Then moved back to Cape Girardeau , Mo. in June of 2024. I salute several KHS high school administrators and teachers who were important in my education, especially Supt. H. Byron Masterson, Principal Floyd Liley, general business teacher, Doyle Borders, math teacher Charlene Mitchell, history teachers Donald Wheatley and Wanda McAnally, and english teacher, Betty Mason. God bless them all.
