Bob's Story
Personal
I married Joanna Anderson (Buchtel 64) in June 1973, and we have one daughter. Kristine graduated from Kent State and the University of California Irvine. She lives in New York City and is a costume designer.
We moved to Doylestown, Ohio in 1978. I developed kidney cancer in 1989. I had a cancer relapse in 2006 which was the beginning of 4 cancer surgeries. After my surgery in 2017 I was declared cancer inoperable by the Cleveland Clinic. Just before Christmas 2017 (while entering hospice) my cancer treatments (immunotherapy) were successful, and I am cancer free today.
Workplace
I worked as a construction laborer and as an apprentice cable splicer (telephones) until drafted. After the Navy I worked in the telephone industry and as a warehouseman. I went to work in Summit Co. government as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and eventually taught wastewater courses for Ohio, I was the first purchasing agent for the Sanitary Engineer and later purchasing agent for Summit Co. I left to be general manager of a trucking company based in Millersburg, Ohio, I returned to Summit County's Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Board as purchasing manager. I was moved to Coordinator of Financial Services, and later Administrator of Summit Housing Development Corporation. I retired as Director of Facilities and CEO of Summit Housing on March 1, 2002.
Having collected Indian relics since I was 10 years old, I authored "Footpaths to Ancient Camp...Expand for more
sites in Copley Township Ohio" in 2006, and later a three-volume compilation of auction catalogs and the history of Prehistoric Indian Art Auctions in Ohio 1972 - 1992. In March of 2025 I released a second edition of "Footpaths" in color and with more stories. In July 2026 I published "Mound Builder Shovel Pendants".
For seven years I served as economic development contact for Doylestown, Ohio, as a board member for a for-profit mental health agency, and a trustee for the Archaeological Society of Ohio. Currently, I am on the board of directors for the Greater Wayne Community Federal Credit Union and continue to write articles for "Ohio Archaeologist" magazine.
I have a AAS in Business from Wayne College, BS in Bus. Education from the University of Akron and a M.Ed. in Administration from Ohio University. I lectured at Kent State's business college, and University of Akron anthropology and archaeology departments. I give talks on prehistoric Ohio and Myers/Briggs personality types to groups all over Ohio.
Military
I was drafted November 1967 and joined the Navy January 9, 1968. I was on the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy as an interior communications electrician, I was assigned to the ship's telephone systems and was on the bridge during re-fueling, replenishment and sea & anchor. Preparing for deployment to Vietnam, we were ordered to Lebanon at the outbreak of their civil war. I was given an early out on Nov. 15, 1971, having done two Med deployments.
