Robert's Story
Life
I actually only attended John Marshall my sophomore year. But many people who graduated from John Marshall in 1975 were people I'd known since grammar school. I attended Glenbard North H.S. in Carol Stream, IL for my last two years, where I graduated. I returned to OKC to attend Elkin's Institute of Technology, which prepared me for getting my 1st Class FCC radiotelephone license. I joined the Navy in the spring of '76 and had basic training in Chicago. I had some schooling in San Diego, CA and New London, CT and was assigned to the USS Pargo, SSN 650, a nuclear fast attack submarine. I earned my dolphins in 1978 and moved to Manhattan when I got out in '81. I was a bartender for a few years while I wrote plays. I had one staged reading of one of my plays for Off Off Broadway. I realized my writing wasn't destined for commercial success and then became a telemarketing manager. I got married, moved to Massachusetts, then got divorced in '88. I married again in '92, and my daughter Elaina was born in '94. I became a software developer in '97. Divorced in '04. I read my poetry at various venues in Western Massachusetts and had a chapbook of the best ones printed in June of '04. After being published in a few print and online literary magazines and anthologies in the mid-2000s I self-published a Collected Poems in 2014, titled My Cynical and Sentimental Eye. After living in western Massachusetts for thirty years I moved to the Texas Hill Country in 2017. Retired and married a Texas gal in 2018. Was published in about a half dozen literary mags in 2019. My daughter graduated from law school in May, 2019, passed the New Hampshire bar and is now a practicing attorney specializing in estate planning and settlement. My wife and I moved to Amarillo in February 2021. I loved being closer to Santa Fe, but we hated the constant wind and the colder winters, so we moved back the the Hill Country in 2023. Since August of 2020 I spent much time mentoring students' computer programming solutions on exercism.org until the fall of 2023. I have seven self-published books of my poetry available as Kindle e-books on Amazon and am focused on reading a...Expand for more
bout and writing poetry nowadays.
School
Except for English, Political Science, and clowning around, I disliked school. I learn faster on my own than in a classroom environment. I'm self-taught in computer programming, which grew from a hobby to my profession.
Workplace
I tended bar in an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village. In 1985 I became a telemarketer for Edward Blank Associates. After a few months I was promoted to Sales Manager. After a couple of years I was promoted to Head Sales Manager and I helped to develop new accounts. I relocated to Massachusetts in 1987 where I was hired as Telemarketing Manager for Continental Cablevision. In 1990 I was promoted to District Telemarketing Manager. I taught myself computer programming to extend the functionality of our Teledirect predictive dialing system. In 1995 I was hired as the Telemarketing Manager for Message Center Beepers, for which I developed the telemarketing contact system. I transferred to the MIS department when MCB was bought by Airtouch Paging. I left Airtouch and became a software developer in 1997. I consulted at various companies from California to Connecticut. After the dot com bubble burst I went to work for an engineering firm for eleven years, and then worked for the largest privately-held US customs broker. I could work from home, but I chafed at the on-call hours, midnight deployments, and other hassles, so I retired about a year after I moved to Texas.
Military
I joined the Navy in 1976. I went to boot camp at Great Lakes Recruit Training Command. I attended Radioman A school, IMCO (International Morse Code Operator) and Basic Electronics in San Diego. I graduated from Submarine School and Radioman C School in New London CT. I reported to the USS Pargo SSN 650 in early 1978. While Pargo was in the yards I rode the USS Dace. I went underway on the Dace during the blizzard of '78, which was the closest I ever got to getting seasick. I was awarded my dolphins on December 10, 1978. During my time on board the Pargo received a Battle Efficiency citation and I received a commendation for our Mediterranean deployment. I was honorably discharged in early 1981.
