Bob's Story
Back after a few years, read my story below and DANG can I yak. Anyway, when you do the interests section of this site, and they ask you "have you ever ....?" If that statement ended "while drunk" I think it would be a lot more entertaining. Not sayin', just sayin'.
Wow, hard to condense 30 years into this little box. What's the same about me: unconventional, idealistic, love dogs, little offbeat, maybe a little off. What's different: my hairline, and I lost most of the smartass edge. I stayed at UCLA for 10 years, earning a BA in English Lit and a Master's in Social Welfare, with a few years as a research assistant in between. Earlier jobs to help put myself through school were selling plumbing fixtures at Sackett and Peter's, driving a bobtail and delivering household goods for "Stan's Vans" out of the Long Beach Harbor, and being a dressed-up "Host" at the restaurant on top of the Bonaventure Hotel in downtown LA. My strangest gig was during graduate school, living as a house man/cat nanny with a psychologist in Brentwood. The upshot of that arrangement (besides free room and board) was having one of LA's top psychoanalysts supervise my own work with homeless veterans.
For the last 12 years I've lived in a diverse, hillside neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles and am a clinical...Expand for more
social worker for a specialized VA Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment Program in East LA. I have a close circle of friends and family that I love and spend a lot of time with. I keep tight with my sister (Sharon, '75) and brother (Bruce, '72). I also do some volunteer work (organizing my neighborhood watch, served on the Glassell Park Neighborhood Council, give tours at a local Frank Lloyd Wright House).
I still do some bicycling and a lot of hiking with my year-old Border Collie, Andy. I should have named him Air Jordan because when he jumps he has vertical clearance you have to see to believe. We're working on his eye-mouth coordination and he's becoming a respectable Frisbee dog too.
I went to our 30 year reunion in October (Thanks Tom Viera for making that happen!) and it was inspiring to see such a great turn out after all these years. Talk about a "blast from the past!" For me, the one thing that tells me I'm getting old (besides the mirror, which reminds me daily) is when I look back to, say, my UCLA days, and I think "wow, twenty years ago...." Then I stop myself and realize, "wait, that was THIRTY years ago!" When did that extra decade slip by? What did I miss? I guess if I can't remember it I was probably having a good time.
Cheers to all Mustangs and Bruins!
