Bonita Spears's Story

Life So; you are visiting and probably wondering; what I've been up to. I guess I should probably begin at the beginning of my adult life. I left home in the late seventies for the Army. I didnt have a plan but, what I wanted was to get my parents off my back. They just wanted me to do something with my life. I had no plan and I didnt really care for school. So, you see; I had already taken the military entrance exam during my junior year of HS. I went to MEPS on a Friday and left the following Monday. I took my entire family by surpirse. I believe I surprised them even more when I made it through Boot Camp. Before both I and my family knew it, I had completed ten years and I was returning from the first Gulf War. It really didnt happen that quickly. You see, well, let me just start from the end of my military life and then work my way to the present just to make your reading a little more interesting. I completed over twenty years of active duty service in the Army. The Army was not always easy with regards to being a female or a minority. You have to remember that this was the late seventies. My mission or assignments were not always the best but, it was a good for me because it caused me to learn, grow and to most importantly mature. I wish that I can say that I always had the very best assignments and supervisors but, I have to admit that I cannot say that that was my experience. All of my assignments were the best nor can I say that I had good supervisors everytime because we had to take the good with the bad. We had and still have a "suck it up" mentality in the military. You do just that when you are unhappy and things may not change until that mission is done, supervisor is replaced or your name comes up to rotate. What I can say is that I learned from each and every assignment and experience that I had. What I can draw from my military experience is that it was a learning experience that I will never outgrow nor forget. Through the Army I have had the opportunity to see the world. I have lived in a few exciting far away lands. I lived in Germany for six years, Korea for a year, Saudi-Arabia and Iraq for 7.5 months, and Haiti for 6 months. I enjoyed Haiti most because I thought that was where my mission allowed us to do the most good and actually see the benefit of that mission. I have lived a few places in the US to include CO, MD, GA, VA, NJ and of course MI. I received both my AA and BA degrees. I will one day return to school to complete an MA when I find the resources. I am divorced and I have four sons and one daughter in law. My sons range in ages from 26-15. My youngest sons are twins. Over a year ago my eldest got married and we added another addition to our family. I finally got a daughter after all of this time. I truly believe that some parents were meant to raise girls and some just boys and I am one of those that are meant to raise boys because I think that my lifestyle as a soldier was much to rough, tough and rugged to raise a girl. I have never been the powder puff type or much of the pink wearing girly, girly however; I have found that fluffy girly girl inside of me over the past eight years now that I have ended my Army career. I am very happy that I got to know her. I am rather choicey when it comes to friends. I think that military instilled that in me and that was one of those better qualities that I have held on to. As a result, I have some of the most wonderful people in my life that will do anything for me and my children and I am grateful to God for them. I also have an awesome guy that helps me to realize that I can have both a + relationship and a career. What I have learned...Expand for more
from him is that you can create the love that you need and want in your life. I now work for the federal govt once again. I believe in the work that I do but, I know that I cant help everyone but, if I can just give one person a small bit of hope and support to hold on to then I have done my job. School I had crushes on a couple of guys but, now I'm not sure why. I now know that the things that go on in HS ie, being disliked, bullying, clicks etc. can have such a huge impact on what you do for the rest of your life if one is not careful. There was not a teacher at Cody who really inspired me but, I enjoyed the Drama class w/Ms. Zimmerman. There was also a young teacher there with very long fingernails. I believe her name was Ms. Wheeler. Those nails were long, red and should have been considered lethal weapons. No I would not do high school over again...not even for a million dollars. I can not remember the funniest thing. The happiest was when I graduated. The craziest was the race riot of 78 (I believe). I was skipping school and Otis Buchannan (I believe that is the reporter's name) saw me on the street and interviewed me. I was hoping that my Dad and Gparents were not watching the news that day because they would then know that I'd skipped. My parents never mentioned it to this day. College I graduated from the University of Maryland with my Associates Degree in 1995. This was extremely difficult because I had a set of newborn twins and two other children. To top that off,in my final year of pursing my AA, I worked twelve hour shifts. It's kind of embarrassing to say so but,it actually took about thirteen years to complete my AA program from start to finish because my military commitment took precedence over everything else in my life. Yes, sad but true...if you do'nt believe me, ask any vet. I retired from the Army in Jan 2000 and I began working on my BA degree in 2002. I completed my BA requirement in Jan 2004 and walked in May of 2004. I was accepted into a Graduate program at Regis University. The degree I was pursuing is a MSW with an emphasis in victimology. I'd like to continue and I am looking for graduate scholarships. Holla at your girl if you find something interesting. After my twin sons graduate in 2010, I plan to take a cruise of some type. A cruise is my personal goal and I intend to cruise prior to my 50th B. Day. Thanks for taking the time to be nosey or to celebrate my life with me. B. Workplace I currently work for the government in a career of a highly sensitive nature. I enjoy my work and I am still serving my country in a different sort of way. I believe my calling is helping people and encouraging and edifying others. I love my job! Military I joined the Army in 1979 when it was not at all female friendly. We have gotten better but, we still have some areas that we can improve. I know...I know, old habits die hard. I had my boot camp and job training at Fort Dix, NJ. From there my first duty station was Fort Carson, CO. From there to Germany; Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD;TACOM- Warren, MI; Camp Humphreys, Korea; Fort Benning, GA; Saudi Arabia-Iraq, Germany again this time in the central part, in a city called Mannheim, Germany; Fort Carson, CO again and finally Haiti. The best assignment of my total career was Haiti because I really believed the military with a joint service and collective effort was helping the destitute in that country. I've also been to Fort Lee, VA for training numerous times and I am a Gulf War Veteran. HOOAH...You can take the girl out of the Army but, never the Army out of the girl!!! All you vets out there know what I'm talking about!
