Bonnie's Story
My dad was stationed at GFAFB most of my school-age years. My friends came and went as their fathers would get orders to move elsewhere. My fondest memories come from playing in the band, and softball in the summer. Some of my friends from Eielson Elementary I would love to reconnect with are: Timberly Adams, Tara Alessandri, Kim, Robin (saxophone player) Blake Evans and Trent (drum players) Trish and Angela (clarinet players), Bridgett Parker who came to Mr. B's class from New Zealand. When we were in elementary some of us went to the junior high to help their band because they were missing instruments in sections.
At Twinning, my friends changed again. Sheri Good came and Stephaine Dixon, Liz, Kim. Valley was a hard transition to high school as we were bussed from the base into town. I made new friends there: Missy Jensen, and then on to Central High where my friends included Missy, Laura Phillips, Mike Loyland and Lew Radonovich, Andrea Berg and Deb. Most of the our free time was spent in band, and working on the newspaper or yearbook.
I went to Macalester college in St. Paul, was lucky enough to study abroad in Moscow for 6 months my senior year. Most of my classes were in the Russian department, as was the last two years of my work study. I played varsity softball, mostly third base. Friends at Mac included Heather Freeman, Clarissa Hanks, C. Scott Cooper, Lisa Miller, Anna Leahy, Mandy Patton, Lia Gima, Rachel Gold, Jen Permann, Alex Dillon, Laura Adams, David E. Miller, and Greg Dale. Aga...Expand for more
in, if you are any of these people mentioned anywhere in this story, I would love to hear from you, and anyone else that remembers me, especially if you live or are around the Philadelphia area.
After college I wanted to work in a government office dealing with Russia, but found out that no one was hiring in the awful economy, so I managed a shoe store. This was not what I wanted to do with my life, and quit after 5 years. I got another job, this time driving a school bus as I went to Hamline University to get a teaching certificate in English as a second language.
I taught 1 year in Minneaplis at Jenny Lind and Bryn Mawr Elementary Schools, and then moved to West Chester, PA as my spouse did a nationwide search and landed a position with West Chester University.
We have been living in West Chester since 1999. I teach in a dual langauge school in Delaware in which we teach our students to read and write, do math, social studies and sceince in both Spanish and English.
A quick recap of the most recent years would be: In 2001 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I taught right through chemo and radiation. In 2004 we started fostering our two daughters, Rachael (born 2001) and Sarah (born 2004). We officially adopted them in 2006. Also in 2006 I earned my national board certification, and my masters in elementary education. As of 2007 I am cancer treatment free. My most recent accomplishment is to be named my school's teacher of the year for 2009, and I am currently entrenched in the district competition.
