Bonnie's Story

Childhood memories.... yes, I have a lot of them, many of them are tied to school, of course. I attended several grade schools in Akron, Ohio: Schumacher Elementary (kindergarten through 2nd grade), Lincoln Elementary (3rd and 4th grades) and then St. Mary's Grade School where I attended 5th through 8th grades. I then attended St. Mary High School, beginning in 1969. St. Mary High School underwent a merger with St. Vincent High School in the fall of 1972, and I was a member of the first graduating class of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in 1973. Due to this merger, many of my junior year classmates did not return, instead attending one of Akron's public high schools for their senior year only. There were 95 students in St. Mary High School's junior class; only 25 or so returned to complete their senior year at the rearranged school. I'd love to catch up with some of those classmates who went to other area high schools. Three weeks after my high school graduation, I married a man from Hibbing, Minnesota who was in Akron completing his engineering degree at the University of Akron. His first engineering job was with General Tire. He lost that job during the recession of 1975 but luckily was rehired at their plant in Marion, Indiana. We pulled up stakes in Akron and spent a boring year in Indiana that seems about 5 years long. You can take a man out of Minnesota but you can't take Minnesota out of the man. These Minnesotans alw...Expand for more
ays want to go home eventually! That boring year in Indiana was the motivation for him looking for work in his home state. He connected with a job in April 1976, we loaded up the Volkswagens, and set off for the Twin Cities. Since moving here, we spent roughly equal amounts of time living on both sides of the Mississippi River which divides Minneapolis from St. Paul. After 24 years in a suburb of St. Paul, we built our retirement home in Duluth MN and moved here last year. Lake Superior is magnificent! I earned my college degrees here in Minnesota, first a BS in Nursing and later, a BS in Clinical Laboratory Science. I've worked in healthcare my whole adult life. I've been retired since Oct. 2016. Still married to that same guy from Minnesota! We celebrated 46 years of marriage in June 2019. Our children have been of the four-legged feline variety, and since we believe in spaying and neutering, there have been no grandkitties. I think about old classmates often. I've lost a few high school classmates that I know of: Marie Yakubik, Sharon Holsey, and Becky Novak. Teresa Ballard (St. Mary's) and Etta Jean Campbell (Lincoln Elementary) from my grade school years have passed on. A number of folks just seem to have vanished, at least as far as the Internet is concerned. What happened to Mary Ann Herkimer, Kimberly Artis, Dennis Considine, John Salinsky and many others? A part of my thoughts is with you and wishing you well....
