Brad's Story
Life
After going to Azusa HS through my Junior year, I did my last year at Charter Oak HS 'cuz my family moved to Glendora. After HS, I tried going to college, but didn't have any study habits so I crashed and burned. I had learned a lot of electronics for my ham radio hobby, so I was able to get jobs in that field. I got married in '65, but crashed and burned at that too. I got drafted in '69 at age 25(!) and they sent me to Germany. After seven months there, I volunteered to go to Vietnam, which thoroughly eliminates any possibility that I might not be insane. I came home after four months there, and found myself suddenly capable of passing some college classes. During the next few years, I remarried + transitioned into the computer industry + got a BS in Business. I lived in New Hampshire for a year-and-a-half, but two New England winters were more than enough for me. I came back to CA in '75, moved to the OC beach area and have lived there ever since. I divorced again in '78.
I have one son who was born in 1980. He finished college in '00, also with a BS in Business, and he now lives with me in Huntington Beach. I've had some ups and downs in the last several years, but am now doing OK working as a software engineer for an aerospace company. My main interests have been astronomy, music, ham radio, roller skating and computers. I started astronomy at age nine and am now more interested than ever, mostly because of all the discoveries being made with high-tech gadgets such as the Hubble Space Telescope. I also started learning to play guitar at age nine, and ended up being in a few bands over the decades, but never had much success at it. I learned a lot of folk rock and stuff like that during the '60s-70s, and that's what I still play the most (when I play at all). The ham radio has come and gone a few times, but I think it's gone for good now. It's easier to just email people. I was heavily into roller skating for a long time, and d...Expand for more
id some speed skating and roller hockey. This was way before rollerblades, so it wasn't all that popular back then. I would still be skating if my bod had held up, but it didn't.
I got interested in computers back in the late 60s, and managed to segue from my "career" in electronics into software engineering. That's what I've been doing ever since, in one form or another
Other interests I didn't mention (yet) are tennis, ping pong, scrabble and writing (no, really?).
I'll probably continue this someday.
Edit - July 2021:
I don't remember when I wrote the above, but it sounds like it was when I was still working. I've now been retired for 12 years. Still living in OC near the beach. Haven't done much for a year and a half due mostly to COVID. Playing my guitar and singing more, and I've gotten pretty good on piano and ukulele. Still living with my son, but that will probably end soon as we're both tired of it. My sense of balance deserted me about 4 years ago, and I couldn't even walk for a few months. I got better and can walk OK most of the time now, but it's still a problem occasionally and I usually carry a cane just in case I need it. I was playing very strenuous ping pong for an hour every day pre-COVID, and was staying in good condition. But I haven't played for almost 2 years now, and am not in such good shape anymore, tho still not too bad. Also pre-COVID, I was taking my telescope to public places at night and showing mostly Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon to anyone who would look. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people looked and were amazed to see rings of Saturn, moons of Jupiter and the Great Red Spot, and craters and other features on the Moon. Most were extremely grateful, as they'd never looked through a telescope before. So I'm getting pretty old and able to do fewer things, leaving me time to add to my story on Classmates, etc. Maybe I'll add to this again if anything interesting happens. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it.
