Brenda's Story

Ciao Everyone! For the last five years my husband & I have lived in Naples, Italy. Perry works for the US Gov't. & this was a chance we couldn't pass up, so in March 2005 we arrived in Naples. We live up on the side of an extinct valcano over looking the mediterranean. So we sit on our veranda, which overlooks a rose garden & vineyard, sipping vino and watching beautiful sunsets over the Med. The life here is different, slower than in the states, with the exception of when they get into their cars. We have traveled to Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, France, Spain, Malta, Ireland, Greece, Belgium, Tunis, Holland & Portugal. We where at the opening day of Oktoberfest 2005 in Munich, what a party they put on! In Italy we have been to Rome, the Vatican museum, St Peter's sq., the Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum, etc. Venice had to ride in an gondola on the Canal Grande, had lunch in Piazza San Marco near St Mark's church. Went to the Island of Murano known for glass blowing, can say I came home with some murano glass, poor Perry had to carry it. While up in Venice, we went to Nove, which is one of the ceramic capitals of Italy, again poor Perry. Tuscany, is so beautiful, one of the area's we are going back to when my sister comes over. Locally we have visited Pompeii, Herculaneum & Mt. Vesuvius. Driven the Amalfi coast, had lunch in Sorrento, that is where they make inlay wood & can't forget Limoncello liqueur. The whole area has panoramic views, clear blue water, is a great place to visit & we are only about an hour away. Went out to the Island of Capri with friends, it's an picturesque place to visit, went into the Blue Grotto by very small boats, another place we will be going back to. We are blessed to have this opportunity, as you can tell we are taking full advantage of being over here. I have also been taking Italian classes, language & cooking, so you can tell I'm not working. I took an early retirement from the school system I worked for in Virginia. Coming over here was a hard decision for we lefted behind Perry's dad, our sisters, our girls & grandkids, plus our friends. We had lived in the same house for 24 years, our girls had grown up there. Not being military, we had to learn the jargon, get ID cards, plus making an military PCS move. The paper work, deciding what was going & what was staying. Getting our pups(Toby & Willie) ready to come, more paper work! We lived out of suitcases & hotels for almost 3 months, before we moved into our house, which means we ate out for most of that time. The food is great, both of us have gained weight, which we are now trying to lose. We have made new friends, learned & seen new things, laughed a lot, cried a little. But the adventure has began, where it takes us, is up to only Perry & myself, so live life to the fullest!!! See the World!! 2008/2009 Just an update, we are still in Italy, we have been traveling in country mostly revisiting the likes of Florence, Venice, Pisa, Rome when friends & family come to visit. We helped make wine again last year from picking the grapes to pressing them, for helping Enzo makes sure we have all the vino we can handle. We where in Dublin, Ireland, for St. Patrick's Day in 2007, another country off my to go to list. I've made good friends & we travel thru out Italy shopping(the ladies & Thomas our GPS) we do have fun on these outings. We also eat out with other couples on Friday's, just can't get enough of fresh Italian cooking, which means we are still trying to lose weight! Perry & I are getting ready to fly to Amsterdam for a week in April 2009 with friends. Hoping to take a day trip to Belgium while we are there to check out lace & rugs. The same friends we went to Sicily with in July & also to the Christmas Markets in France & Germany over Thanksgiving 2008. We still haven't made it to London yet, but England is on my must see list. We've been here for over four years now, our last year count down has already started. Still so much to see & do, before we come home. So again, live life to the fullest, it helps to keep us young. June 2010 We moved back to the states in March, what an adjustment..been trying to get our house back in order. Looks like we are rebuilding it from the inside out, but it's coming along slowly. We really miss the slower life style, real Italian food & of course all our friends. We are now looking at retirement, do we stay in Virginia or move some place else......at this point who knows..??? Have about two years to make up o...Expand for more
ur minds, so much can happen in that time frame. April 2012 We sold our house in Va.Beach & retired to The Villages, FL. It's a large retirement community & we drive golf carts everywhere, a very active life style which is good for our age group! So again enjoy life to the fullest, you never know what tomorrow will bring!! July 2014 We just got back from Alaska/Canada.....Alaska is so beautiful, spent 10 days inland & 5 days on ship...Went up into the Yukon, the animals, panning for gold, train rides, paddle boat ride, the puppy's, meeting new friends, can you tell we had fun!! Flew from Vancouver to Virginia for our oldest grandsons High School graduation, couldn't miss his big day! While there visited Perry's sister & drove up to Winchester,VA. to see my Uncle Bill he's 89 yrs old, was so good to see him.....after 21 days on the road was good to get home again! Already booked our next trip in 2015!! This is what keeps us young! Here in The Villages, Perry plays golf 5 times a week, we've taken dance lessons, so we can now show off our new moves at Katie Bells or at one of the squares in the evenings. Still having fun, this is what we worked hard for all those years! So enjoy your life & travel ! April 2016 We cruised the Caribbean in February 2015 & February 2016 with Rocky & the Rollers, they are a Rock & Roll band that play's here in the Villages...This year we went with 36 other villagers from our Village of Charlotte, we all had a great time! Perry is still playing golf 4/5 times a week & I'm finally taking golf lessons!! True to form Perry is more excited than I am, but at least I'm trying!! We had a grandson graduate HS in June 2016 in VA. & have a granddaughter graduating HS in May 2016 here in FL. We are heading to Virginia in June to see our daughter & family...up to see Uncle Bill in Winchester....Then back to Va. Beach to bring our two youngest grandkids back to FL. with us....they love it here...golf cart rides, dancing in the squares, camp villages for grandkids & of course being with us....So again enjoy life, family, friends & always travel! October 2020 Looks like it's been a few years since I updated..... What a year 2020 has been!!! .I hope everyone was safe during this time.....Of course we haven't traveled anywhere!!! We also couldn't celebrate our 50th Anniversary, so we are now planning on a 55th celebration.....But before all of this started ..... In 2019 we went on a cruise with Perry's sister Bunny, her husband AJ, our friends Jim & Jo....to Key West, the Cayman islands, cruise through the Panama canal.... Stayed 5 days in Costa Rica, can say we all enjoyed ourselves....took hundreds of pictures, shopped until we dropped & tried new foods...the rain forest is beautiful! We also went to Virginia for our grandson (Aaron) graduation from The Virginia State Trooper Academy....Also visited with friends in Richmond, while we were there In February 2018 we cruised again with Rocky & the Rollers in the caribbean for a week, we really enjoy these cruise's, we like dancing to the oldies.... The grandkids came to visit for a month which included golf lessons at the Arnold Palmer Jr golf academy, swimming, eating out, dancing in the squares. We spent Christmas in Virginia with our oldest daughter Joy & family. In 2017 we stayed home, the grandkids came to visit for 6 weeks, so there was golfing lessons, swimming, camp villages, golf cart rides, going to the squares in the evenings to see Scooter the DJ, our granddaughters favorite entertainer. We had Christmas with our youngest daughter Heather & family We are making plans to see America, the National Parks, plus the many places I haven't seen & Perry wants to show me!!!! Guess this updates a little to what we've been up to the pass few years..... Remember to enjoy your life & to always travel it's a big world out there!!! June 2022 Well hi everyone! Can't say we've been traveling.....Did make it to Virginia for Christmas 2021 for a few days....We went to meet our great grandson Noah, our grandson Brandon & wife Joseline had come in from New Jersey....Can't believe we are great grandparents, where did the time go? We are looking into The National Parks again, that trip was being planned when the pandemic broke out. We want to see America, Perry has seen most of the National Parks, but he wants to show them to me....But at this time we are still in Florida playing golf, going to the Squares to listen & dance to music, been to a few small concerts, eating out with friends.... can't complain we do have a good life.....So I hope everyone is happy & well....
