Brent's Story

Life Since finishing high school, I have had a somewhat interesting life. I attended Bethel College, 1979-1884, graduating with a degree in German/International Relations. After working one year for U.S. Senator Rudy Boschwitz, I began work at the U.S. Department of State in 1985. Initially, I was a Special Agent with the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, serving as Asst. Chief of Security in Embassy Nairobi, then Chief of Security in the Central African Republic. Thereafter I joined the 'regular' diplomatic service as an Administrative Officer, serving in Brazzaville, Congo, Haiti, and Monterrey Mexico before studying Russian at the Foreign Service Institute and working two years in the Nuclear Risk Reduction Center. We then did three years in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (2003-2006), and have just completed three more at the American Embassy Tel Aviv, Israel (2006-2009). The Holy Land was a wonderful experience, but we still pray for peace in that region. My final job with the State Department was with the U.S. Air Force in Germany, as Political Advisor to United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and Air Forces Africa (AFAFRICA) at Ramstein Air Base. However, in 2013, a similar position was created at the NATO Allied Air Command, also located on Ramstein AB. Threw my hat into the ring of candidates, got selected, so: I RETIRED!!! (sort of - last day with State was Dec 31, 2013, started new job on Jan 1, 2014 ). We are thus still are living in GERMANY, where I am now the Senior Political Advisor to the Commander (a four-star US Air Force general officer ) of NATO's Air Command. 'AIRCOM' serves as the Headquarters for air, space, and missile defense operations of the NATO Alliance. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, founded in 1949 at the beginning of the Cold War) is an alliance of 26 European nations and 2 in North America (US/CAN) which serves to protect western and central European member nations from external threats (e.g, bad neighbors, like Mr Putin's Russia), as well as maintain peace outside its borders and assist its many partner nations in maintaining stability and dealing with threats which, if not checked, will ultimately affect NATO countries. The US is the largest contributor to the Alliance, which also serves to build a strong and lasting bridge, based on mutual interests and shared democratic values, on both sides of the Atlantic. My job at AIRCOM is to advise on political developments in countries outside, but near or a...Expand for more
ffecting, the Alliance's interests (e.g, Ukraine, these days... + North Africa and the Middle East) as well as internal political decisions made by the North Atlantic Council, the political body governing the Alliance. Basically, I assist in connecting global political, social, and economic events, trends and developments with AIRCOM's military missions. I travel quite a bit around Europe and the region. We plan to be here for the next several years. We bought an old farmhouse (built 1903) with a big barn in a quiet little German village about 15 minutes away from the base - COME AND VISIT US! I served in the Foreign Service for over 28 years (Gee, I feel old!), and have now been with NATO since the beginning of 2014. I speak German, French, Spanish and Russian. I was married in 1990 to Mary Primrose (Fernandes), whom I met in Kenya. We have two daughters: Christie Rose, who was born to us in 1996, and Darya Anjela (Dasha), whom we adopted in 2006 as a 'big sister' for Christie just before we left our diplomatic posting in Uzbekistan. Dasha was born in 1993. Both girls graduated in 2014, and Dasha got married last year. Christie, who is handicapped (cerebral palsy) lives with us in Germany, where she is attending college classes offered by the Univ of Md on the air base. Hobbies include travel (goes with the job territory - over 70 countries last count), foreign language, collecting antiques, vintage cars and motorcycles (58 Buick Super**, '55 Studebaker Speedster, and a Soviet-built Dnepr military motorcycle). I also enjoy horseback riding, sports, fine food & wines, reading, and so forth. ** UPDATE ** My '58 Buick Super is the SAME ONE, blue-and-white 2dr, I drove in high school! I had sold it to my old girlfriend's dad [Sara Tempte] in 1978, went overseas, and lost contact of her and the car for over 30 years. I found Sara again about 7-8 years ago right here on the Classmates website. Asked about the Buick, and turned out her brother still had it in a barn in Wisconsin, but NO, it WASN'T for sale. On a brief visit back to MN in 2013, found out from Sara that her brother needed $$ and the car was now up for grabs! You know what happened next. Right now it's in Mpls where it's being restored. Should have it on the roads of Minnesota again in Summer 2015. Life has been an adventure. "Home" is still Minnesota, though we have houses in Virginia and Florida. If you are ever traveling in our part of the world, please come and visit!
