Brett's Story
Life
I got domesticated! Live in a house in Elk Grove, small - but it's mine. I got married to Andrea Ranger from Pollock Pines in 2001. I got my Associates in Business, and I currently own my own business as a professional Disc Jockey (The DJ Edge), this year I tripled the business in growth. I own 2 dogs (Chewbacca), Sammy (both Llasa Apsos: quirky furry dogs that look like Ewoks) and a turtle (Frodo). Life is good! I have been a Scout Master for the last 2 years which is great because I love to camp and my wife hates it (I tried to teach her to like it once...it was part of our honeymoon... all I can say is I've never seen so many meat bees in my life except maybe on a cartoon. I haven't tried to convince her since, some things aren't meant to be.) I also teach religion to Deacons of my faith, pretty rewarding. Also, if your in town and your up for a game of racquetball, let me know, I'd love to play...except you Shawn Royster, you'll kick my butt!
Updated 12/6/06 Got into a motorcycle accident back in April, the bike of my dreams is dead. Broke my pelvis in 3 places, and I am walking again. I flew about 45 ft and luckily I decided not to get the skull-cap afterall, racing helmets definitely a plus (as English Teacher Cavaghan would say).
My wife recently underwent treatment on her Thyroid they zapped it with iodine 31 (I believe) so she is radio active for another 4 months (to bad it was after halloween that would have been cool). Anyway, she was diagnosed with Graves disease. Some of you know that we've been trying to have kids for quite some time (I know some of you are thinking thank goodness for Graves Disease). I wish the doctors from 4 years ago were more competant when my wife had her 1st miscarriage. Hopefully now that her Thyroid is "mostly dead" kids will be in our near future.
Update 9/14/07
We have started the adoption process, and we are hoping someone is crazy enough to give us a baby. Funny enough, my wife and I now work in the nursury at church so we get to play with lots of chubby cheeked kids every week. That will at least hold us over for awhile (yeah right it makes things worse!)
School
My first year in college was crazy, I didn't know what to expect. I learned in the 1st semester that you could not live in the dorms and take a spanish class at 7am. It was a year full of pranks; goldfish in the cafeteria water fountain, setting the alarm off for breaking into the school after hours and leaving cookies for the cops, and last but not least repelling off the side of the stadium (which was a blast!). I thought I was going to major in Photography but I hated my teacher so I stopped taking classes in it. I copped out and went mainstream - business management. Learned that the college has motion detecters (got caught by the cops) I and some friends took a midnight swim and canoe in the pool the day before finals (we were all stressed out). ready put the cuffs on me!!! You seemed a little nervous that day Jeremy, remember? I had a great time at college, most of my other teachers were awesome, I learned a lot about religion after I pulled my pranks, and I served a 2 year mission in Mississippi & Texas for my church.
I graduated with an AA degree in Business Management, which actually was very beneficial for my career now. I went back to college to see if I couldn't get my BS degree in Business and Accounting. In all reality, dating probably took precedence at the time (I was working as a carpet cleaner to make money for college and I was donating plasma to help pay for dates). In the end, I ran out of funds, I loved the experience, and all my credits vanished within a year. Learned a lot, nothing to show for it but my AA. I moved home for awhile and saw some familiar faces at Sac State and American River. (My Classes that I took at AR didn't transfer well to Sac State) At this point I hung my hat "and I did it myyyyyy, way"!
Workplace
All I can say is this... Frrrrreeeeeeedddddoooommmmmmm! As Mel Gibson would say in Braveheart. I have the best employer in the world, me.
Tried the rat race played the games, glad I'm out. Started at Taco Bell, then Lawn care, then tempt as a secretarial and clerical, started Accounts Payable in the same company (DDSO a non-profit organization) but I felt obligated to donate 4 hours every week in a smoke filled room of Bingo players. My co-worker hated my guts because my position used to be hers and she wanted it back. Bad blood in the office! Then I moved on as a Bookkeeper/Office Manager.
I liked the whole Office Manager scene but it was a small office, and they couldn't pay well. It was very hard to make ends meet. At this point house prices and cost of living was going crazy. So I decided to try DJing part time to make ends meet, mostly just for friends and family. I moved on to go back to Accounting Assistant for a pretty nice company, I just didn't fit in from the start, everyone was so into the company, California Pharmacist Association, and what it stands for...meanwhile, I'm ordering drugs from Canada because I'm diabetic I can't afford what I need even with my job's insurance. I was doomed from the beginning! But my little business started to grow (The DJ Edge). Infact I was making more from the business than from my regular 9-5 job. I left CPhA a year ago and things have never been more exciting and rewarding. My teachers always knew I was never a detail person. But it wasn't until recently that I learned that I was an idea and big picture person. And I have found that the jobs from the past help me to know how to run a business professionally. We have handled some rather large accounts from Kaiser Permanente to the Galleria Mall.
Promotional advertising is more of a filler during the weekdays. We actually specialize in weddings and receptions.
Recently we have picked up a monthly Christian Hip Hop Club in Brentwood.
