Brian's Story

Life I've been living in NY for a couple of years now. Always loved acting so I figured I'd throw in for a few hands, and what better place to become a cliche than New York City! Actually, I've always enjoyed the new city, found it enchanting, exciting; thru movies mainly. Indeed, it remains one of the reasons I've stayed: its ENERGY. It's a world in itself. (Forgive my lyric; I've just finished B. Dylan's Chronicles and have adopted his stream of consciousness prose! Next week I'll be stealing from Dostoyevsky's style...) In truth, the move up had more to do with practical reasoning than impatient reckoning. I had decided that it would be easier to start as a filmmaker than as an out of work actor. Not easier, but more practical; my chances of success would be greater. Hell, I figured if I was the one in charge of MAKING the movie then I could just as well put myself in it. Worked for others in the past- Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Billy Bob Thorton, even Quentin Tarantino. So I found Brooklyn College. Some research online included it to be among the top 5 public institutes to offer filmmaking. Of that short list, BC was the cheapest. And since I had no desire to see Main or visit North Carolina, and since California seemed too far a stretch for my pathetic limbs, I'd decided to live out my fantasy in the capital of the world. New York City was just as fantastic and unreal as I had imagined. I had been here once or twice before- a class trip to Midtown, a concert in Central Park- but now it was different: I would become a participant now, not just a blind observer. I could do things, be a part of things, interact. In the early days I ran around trying to get any audition I could find- even had an agent supposedly "lookin'" for me. Most the time I spent off set on some megamillion production waiting to be featured among a thousand other extras. For the few months I had a go at it, I was really only invited to open calls- that's when anyone off the street came come in to audition. Actual auditions are more difficult to come by, gotta be a certain physical type, often you go...Expand for more
tta be unionized. But I was just biding time anyhow. My first semester I had mostly core courses- the peas and carrots of a well-balanced education. But it wouldn't be long until I fetched my steak. And don't think I didn't go back for seconds and thirds. 'n fact, I ended up eatin' so much steak it's taken me an extra 2 years to finish my plate. For a period of at least a year and half I did nothing but work on other people's films. Late nights, over nights, early mornings, all day, this is how I got to know most my colleagues, this is how I got to know filmmaking, really. I held a regular job, too, usually full-time- had to pay rent after all. So it became no surprise to me when I discovered my GPA was dropping like a dead bird in the sky. But it was too late- I was addicted, couldn't stop. I even loved it. I helped anybody and everybody and did everything and anything I could to help them get their film in the can. I made many friends and acquired even more favors from people, but most would eventually be lost or forgotten. The greater gift, I would later learn, that I would retain was the experience itself; the many lessons I would pull from the mistakes of others; the understanding of the crafts within the culture; the strengths and faults of my contemporaries; the realization of personal power. Those gifts would carry me farther than an I-owe-you; those gifts would remain with me. It would take another year and half of daydreaming in Paris, and other such excursions- a chapter in itself- until I would realize my true standing and embark on what would become the journey of my life (I say that as if I'm retired or dying, but really I mean, "the direction to where I stand now, and to where I intend on continuing," if that makes any sense). School Wow. Life was so much cheaper in HS! My least favorite experience in HS was graduating (ha-ha). I had one hell of a time in Buena! Friends are everything... College I'm a Film major at Brooklyn College and I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever graduate. Still, I'm better off being a student for now than a starving artist.
