Brian's Story

Know what an ISO is? More than one person has said I should write a book about my life. Lucky for you there isn't enough room here. I'll give you the condensed readers Digest version. But I have to start at the end and talk about my beautiful wife. She's a Critical Care Flight Nurse; she lands at crash scenes in a helicopter and saves lives. I married WAY up and outta my league. See, I saved some acid from back in the day... Seriously though, she says she loves me. Sometimes. She puts up with me, that's what counts. Ok so, before her, I married the 1st girl that gave me the time of day. She had 2 boys. They both are long out of school, one has a great job, he's a manager at Schneider, the trucking co. Orange truck with the black road on it? Pics of him and his available. I'm rather proud of him. Beautiful 8 year old girl that I'm honoured to call my granddaughter even though he's a step son. They still call me Dad and the last time I checked my wallet I felt like a Dad. (He hasn't borrowed in a decade, but it makes me laugh when I say it). He's 31, his younger brother has 4 more years out of 12 at the State pen. He calls me Dad too but mostly he calls me collect. He tried to follow my footsteps I guess, but I think he out ran me. Guess the 1st one rebelled against me. There came a time in my life when I was ready to grow up but their mother wasn't interested, so we hung it up. The boys aren't too close to her either. Kinda sad. The time line. As if I remember. Late 11th grade I ran away from home, the mother caught up, said I could live with the older brother in New York. A lie. So with a little work I got kicked out of the house instead. And school. After several jobs as a bus boy I took to steeling. B&E's are so much more profitable. 'Cept every time you find a good stereo you have to sell it for drugs. I never got too hard core, but I did do everything from coke, to crack. Problem is, Breaking and Entering is a felony. I got lucky and was sentenced to only 9 months. That was my 3rd time, for a total of 15 months. This last time a man said I could get out of my cell for awhile if I wanted to study for the GED. Said to take the test so I could see where I needed to study. I passed. Back to the cell... Gave up on the steeling gig and got married the 1st time. (rhymes with worst time, notice that?) A few years on Welfare and General assistance, then a job as a used car reconditioner was handed to me. Kept that a few years, moved to a factory job, kept that 8 years... Along about '87, I'm working at the factory, making a reasonable living and looking for a hobby. I found a computer. Took to it too. Got into the old BBS world and learned about networking and building and fixing computers. Got to be friends with a prosecuting attorney that remembered me. Fellow computer geek and all is what we had in common. He said to blow the factory job and try working for a consul...Expand for more
ting firm so I did. My intent is not to brag; in fact I'd like to visit some public schools and tells students how I'm a good 20 years behind in my career. Due directly to drugs. I gotta wonder where I'd be did I not do drugs, and had more than a GED for an education. That said, this is pretty cool:-) Still getting stoned, in '95 I'm a consultant at Herman Miller. Making a decent living; not great, nothing like the older siblings, but I'm ok... I worked there until '97. Seems I had a bit of a reputation. Oddly, a good one. Late '97, Herman Miller offers me a job. Not a shabby one either. Same time, a man I worked with at Herman Miller, took a job as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of a good company based in Grand Haven. He too offered me a job. An even better one. Nice Salary and a promise of all the computer classes I could handle. Of course I accepted! Then he gave me 3 weeks to get cleaned up before a drug test. Last time I did any drug. Even quite smoking. Like I say, I fired the 1st wife, and started getting happy. Bought a house and pretended I was a typical middle class American. Took a bunch of different classes. 6 tests later I got my MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), some Oracle DB training... Then I saw the results of a company that got hacked. Some kid in Chicago broke into the network of an auto parts manufacturer. Friend of mine showed me. Deleted a ton of files, cost $$$$ while the company is down waiting for the files to be restored from backup, then more to prevent it from happening again... So, I'm on the internet learning how to do that! Sweet!!!! I get some classes on how to prevent it. Better yet, I learn from the internet how to perform forensics, to track down the hacker. This field is just starting to become a necessary evil. I'm on the ground floor of this one. Several books and 5 more tests and I have my SCP and CISSP. Security Certified Professional and Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Within that period I find the wife I'll never let go of. An opportunity afforded her took us to Central California. Oakdale, a little ways South East of Stockton. So, finally the long and the not so short of it is, I'm an ISO (Information Security Officer) for a multi-national corporation based in Medford Oregon. That's right, my sorry GED carcass is an executive officer. I work from our home here; it's considered a conflict of interest to work from the inside of the network when my job is to keep people out. It's a world wide web, I can take control of a computer in Shanghai from a Starbucks. 46 years old, I can finally afford to put money in a savings account. Got a neighbour on drugs? Lemme talk at 'em! I have to wear long sleeve shirts to hide the jailhouse tats until a company trusts me. I'm Brian Adams. The short SOB that couldn't even make it to the booth to get voted never gonna succeed. Is your network safe?
