Brian's Story

When I graduated from Harry Ells High School in 1960 I had not yet reached my 17th birthday.....I had reddish-gold hair, zitz and stood 5'11 in my gangly and tan swimmer's body.....The post-war world that I saw was so exciting , terrifying, and magnetic that my hormone-laden, and sexually-driven, body felt like a 4th of July sparkler most of the time......Although I saw my family and the city of Richmond falling apart , and the mushroom-cloud of Civil Rights guaranteeing future Social chaos, I felt sure that as an open-minded , semi-bright young white man [ without heavy ethnic nor religious Prejudices ]... with borderline good looks, could accomplish whatever his goals were.....Showing my abstract- impressionist paintings [ done in Mr. Biasotti's terrific Art classes ] along with some charcoal sketches and mural works, I was able to secure a Scholarship to the Calif. College of Arts and Crafts in 1960-61....While attending CCAC , I worked at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, where the exposure to the mysteries and marvels of birth, sickness , death --and all the cataloguing and record-keeping that Healthcare requires-- awoke in me a lifelong interest in The Human Being, you, and me.., Homo Sap.....I was a Lab. Assistant under the head of Pediatrics. Dr Edwin Schoen taught me rigorous protocol for conducting lab experiments in the early days of Cancer Research with Steroid Hormone applications-- with some asides in the arena of Gender reassignment.......From this somewhat Esoteric arena I decided to choose Hairstyling and the world of Looks as my profession...Keeping the hands, mouth, feet and mind busy at all times, with the immediate daily rewards of money, artistic satisfaction and information exchange, [ hopefully with humor and bon amie.] ....Knowing I'd probably be a hairdresser forever, I wanted to try something else completely different for a short time and signed on as Quartermaster Surveyor [ a map- maker ] on board the US Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship PIONEER, based in Oakland's Jack London Square.....After 29 days at sea in the North Pacific in ...Expand for more
January '65, I resigned and relaxed in Hawaii for awhile....There I ran into Cindy Ford and her man David driving tour groups around Oahu..... Then it was off to Hollywood for Cosmetology School, but I couldn't tolerate the bad air and traffic in L.A. and came back up to S.F.... I lived near the Grace Cathedral and worked for Charles of the Ritz Salon in I. Magnin 's for a bit....Then moved to Oakland, where I have made my life and living ever since 1966.....As I wanted to delve more into the Human Condition, I attended Community College for two years [ I typed my term papers while my clients were under the hair dryers ]...With excellent grades I was able to secure a Scholarship and entered the School of Anthropology at U.C. Berkeley in '68-69 ,while still cutting Hair..... After several tries with live-in lovers , I finally ran into a handsome, well-mannered, clean, thrifty, reverent and trustworthy !! person with whom I have shared the last 31 years of my Life ...Our social Life is like Int'l House at U.C. Berkeley, one which includes people of many countries, interests, ages, professions , religions, and walks of Life ...Our home is a ranch-style place about 1000 feet up in the Oakland hills, next to the Chabot Golf Course..... Some personal interests :In 65 years I have owned some very Classy Cars; just sold of the 1960 Bentley Sll and now drive an emerald green MBZ CL500 Coupe.....We enjoy many of the Arts, whether dramatic, photographic, plastic, culinary, conversational, couture, and even just the Art of Living.....At the Moment David is trying to instruct me in the fine Art of transferring photos to my spot here at Classmates.com.....as soon as possible you will see what the ravages of this good Life hath wrought upon my Self..... Now I hope you, dear reader, have found the reading of this page as interesting as I certainly have enjoyed the writing of it to be......With Regards,..........Brian Bennett.......October 12, 2008..........................................................................................................................
