Brian's Story
Life
I'm the oldest of 3 brothers.
2 years younger: Dave Elmer
10 years younger: Wayne Elmer
School history:
Clinton Street Elementary (started grade 1 about 1956)
McPherson Park Junior Secondary
Burnaby South Senior High, grad of 1968
Post-Secondary:
BCIT: Broadcast Communications, TV Production, 1968-1970
Work history, 1970 to 2010, CHBC Television, Kelowna, B.C. (now Global Okanagan)
Served in many capacities, including directing news, producing and directing station promotions, producing and directing live-to-tape parade telecasts, worked and supervised Master Control and conducted station tours in a public relations capacity
Family Church:
South Burnaby United
Mom sang in the choir and gave it a powerful soprano voice
The church had loudspeakers on the roof that would belt out hymns, especially effective when the chimes were played through the system
Memorable school moments:
McPherson Park Jr. Secondary:
--4 by 110 relay at Empire Stadium, McPherson Park Jr. Sec. ruled!
--The "jam run"--a jogging circuit from the school along past Malkins Cannery on McPherson Avenue where the air would often be thick with the smell of pickles or strawberry jam. It often made it difficult to breathe when exercising out on the field.
Influential teachers at Burnaby South:
--Laurie Lyons--Acting/drama for "Acting 11." His classes helped students discover themselves and bring their best qualities to the surface. He encouraged us to go to live stage productions all over the Lower Mainland--and we did--and we loved it.
--Also appreciated an Econom...Expand for more
ics teacher who taught us that the affairs (and problems) of the world are rooted in economics.
--History with Mr. Lepkin was most interesting. He certainly knew his material. I'll always remember details on the French "Maginot" line during World War II and how it was simply flanked by the German forces.
--Physics teacher, Mr. Glover, was said to be capable of high-level work in the field of physics but he chose to teach because he enjoyed it. I thought that Physics 11 was excellent! Studies such as in the area of optics and triangulation were fascinating to me and useful in my chosen career. He said that each of us, in terms of child-rearing expenses for our parents, represented "our father's Rolls Royce."
My goodness, I'm old enough to remember climbing aboard the Inter-urban Tram at a McPherson Street stop! That rail system was way ahead of its time and much of the old railbed is now the right-of-way for SkyTrain.
I'm also old enough to remember the "Royal Oak Theatre" where my brother and I would go regularly on a Saturday morning to see "serialized" movies. At intermission, the theatre would feature talent time such as yo-yo demonstrations--remember "walk the dog?"
Anybody remember Digney Bowl or Digney Speedway?Anybody remember Drakes' Drive-In Dairy, across the street from South? I worked there for a while during school and learned how to gently close the car doors of customers when placing their milk order inside! I'm pretty sure that a Tim Horton's is located now on the same property.
I'd love to hear your recollections!
