Brian's Story
After having little direction in life for several years after high school, I finally decided to get an education. I am currently a third-year Ph.D. Candidate at Stanford University in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences. Being a Ph.D. Candidate at Stanford is a pretty nice gig -- my tuition is free and they pay me to teach classes and do research. I taught my first class at Stanford (a Paleontology lab) during Winter Quarter 2007 and my second (Carbonate Sedimentology) during Spring Quarter 2008. I definitely had some lousy, boring jobs before I went to college, so it's great to finally be doing something that I enjoy.
My research is on the recovery of coral reef ecosystems following the worst extinction in the history of life. This is really just a fancy way of saying that I study coral reef fossils. eldwork during the summer of 2007. I will be spending three months in China during the fall of 2009 to complete the fieldwork for my Ph.D. After that, I'll be stuck working in a laboratory for the following two and a half years to finish my dissertation.
One of the best things about studying earth science is that you get to travel -- a lot. In addition to spending six weeks in China in 2007, I have traveled to New Zealand and I've also been able to see most of the USA. During the spring of 2007 I spent a week on Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific Ocean and went snorkeling around some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world.
I currently live about 30 miles south of San Francisco with my girlfriend, Nichole, and our two cats. No kids yet -- I still feel like a kid myself, even though I'm now 33 years old.
