Brian's Story

Here’s my post-high school story in case anyone cares: Let me go back even further. I spent the majority of my school years in Puyallup. If you’re familiar with the Park & Ride lot that’s near South Hill Mall today, that’s where my house used to be. Went to Meeker Elementary and Kalles Junior High and I would have gone to Rogers High School but we moved to Kennewick almost half way through my 9th grade year (Dec, 1980), so I went to high school over there. I remember it being a big transition going into a new school where I didn’t know anyone. I was lucky to take driver’s ed. as a freshman, so when most of my peers were taking it as sophomores, I already had my license. I joined the Washington Army National Guard on September 24, 1982 in Pasco and did basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey in the summer between my junior and senior years. We moved to Everett about 3 weeks after graduation and I lived there for 3 years. In the summer of 1984 I went to Indiana for my Advanced Individual Training (AIT). I began working on full-time active duty for the Washington Army National Guard on Valentine’s Day of 1985, first in Everett (2 years), then to Tacoma (Camp Murray) (3 1/2 years). Then a recruiting job opened up and they offered me a choice of Seattle or the Tri-Cities and of course I moved back to Kennewick. It was going to be just like old times, or so I thought. Boy, was I wrong. My first day there, my new boss told me I’d be working out of Grandview. Had I known that, I would have stayed put in Tacoma. I hated Grandview but toughed it ...Expand for more
out for about 6 years. They then moved me to Port Orchard in 1997 and I’ve been living here ever since. In addition to recruiting, I worked mostly in personnel administration, although I was also trained as a gunner on an M1 tank and in Military Police (I can spell M.P. 2 out of 3 times but that’s about it). I retired from the Guard at the end of 2006. I then took a job driving a semi-truck and did that for about a year-and-a-half but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. Got to travel all across the U.S. and western Canada but I was almost never home. In 2008, I started working for the Navy in Silverdale as a civilian and have been there ever since. I love my job and am fortunate to work with some really great people. I’m a Human Resources Specialist, GS-12. When I graduated from high school, going to college was the furthest thing from my mind. As I’ve aged, I rediscovered what going to school was like. I got my associate’s degree from Olympic College in Bremerton in 2011 (3.67 GPA), my bachelor’s degree in H.R. Management from Western Governors University in 2013, and a master’s degree, also in H.R. Management, from Southern New Hampshire University in 2018 (3.94 GPA). I would have killed for those kind of grades in high school. My hobbies include bicycling, traveling (I’ve been to 49 states plus Europe a couple of times), and I’ve recently gotten into woodworking. I stay pretty busy most of the time. Oh, yeah, I’m also a survivor of prostate cancer. Can’t forget that. So that’s about all there is to tell about me. What’s your story?
