Brian's Story

Life After High School graduation, I moved to Columbia, SC and went to USC on a Vocal Scholarship. Music took me to a lot of new states and countries singing and it was wonderful. I spent three years as a Music Education major but eventually changed my major to Journalism. I actually paid for college by working several jobs(construction, carpet cleaner, barbecue cook, sound system manager, government staffer, Church Choir. . . ) , but the majority of my income came from singing in a band. My first band at USC actually released a decent demo cassette (yes cassette, I'm old) in '92. A three piece band I was in was actually offered a "tentative (at best)" recording deal by two labels, London and Island records. However, a few weeks later we dis-banded. It was probably for the best! In '93 I graduated college and started working at the local NBC affiliate. I also started freelancing for various sports networks covering all college sports as well as professional football, basketball and hockey. I was also offered a few jobs in D.C., Atlanta and New York, but in '95 I met someone who ruined my career, for the best, so I stayed in Columbia. I married her in April of '97. I bought my first house in '98 and a few weeks after we moved in I found an 11 week old puppy floating in a canal. He was essentially my first born child and is still with us. In '03 I received an Emmy (Southeastern Regional) for working on a winning News...Expand for more
cast. That was a wonderful feeling, however, it was greatly overshadowed in '04 when my daughter was born. She is the joy of my life. Sadly, in '06 my Father died very suddenly and unexpectedly. I still miss him very much. Needing a change in my life, realizing that I wanted to spend more time focusing on my home life than a 24/7 news gig, I left the local NBC affiliate that year and started with the fledgling CW affiliate in town. It is a wonderful place to work! In '07 we moved about 20 miles away (still in Columbia) and built a larger house. If you ever have the chance to build yourself a new house, beat yourself half to death with a stick first. It's a remarkably similar experience. Also in '07 I was very honored to receive the South Carolina Broadcasters Association STAR Award for Commercial of the Year for a commercial I made. As well, to add more excitement at home, we have added a hermit crab and a cat to our growing household. My daughter can be quite demanding at times! In the 19 years since I have graduated from High School, I have pretty much learned that for me, work needs to be left in the workplace and not be allowed to spill over into the home. Marriage is wonderful but is a vocation in and of itself and is not always easy. On top of all of that, Family (whether they are relatives or a strong long lasting foundation of friends) is the most important thing. Also, it is very difficult to not gain weight!
