Brian's Story
Life
Seems like I spent most of high school in Mrs. Knapp's computer lab, and ended up programming computers for a living - no surprise there. But almost everything else is. I was a sweet-a-holic couch potato, and have run five Boston marathons. And have raced bicycles - I never ever would've believed it. With only half a left hand, I'm a decent golfer and piano player. I thought I'd hate living in the Seattle area for a planned two years - loved it for eight years. Marriage was very, very hard, and after an 8-yr single stretch, I'm married to an angel and every single day is a good day - amazing. My children are grown... but I get to do it again - I have a toddler, one on the way, and a couple more after that if we're lucky. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?! Years ago I believed a promise by Ezra Taft Benson: "Men and women who turn their lives over to God will find that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can." It both makes a lot of sense, and is absolutely true. Just do a little bit every day, and wow, it piles up. I love the go...Expand for more
spel of Jesus Christ, and the hope He offers. The gospel works. Life is very promising.
School
I'm lucky - I already knew in high school that I liked programming computers, and it just happens to have payed decent. It still boggles my mind how clueless I was in school. Whenever anyone says "wouldn't you like to be young again?" my immediate reaction is "no way!!" Thank goodness we get to keep growing up.
I also like the idea that while we grow up, we don't have to grow old. I started running at 30, marathons at 38, and was in the best shape of my life at age 40. If we're heavy (and you know I was if you remember me), we don't have to stay that way. If we have self-defeating habits, we don't have to keep them. If we've always wanted to learn something, we can. The gospel says "we can change."
Workplace
After years at WordPerfect and Microsoft, I jumped into a medical software start-up with a friend from '04 to '10. Having been thus entrepreneurially tainted, I'm enjoying consulting on my own and looking for the right next adventure.
