Brian's Story
After working for 38 years as a research scientist in lasers and electro-optical sensors, I retired in September of 2017 and relocated from Lafayette, CO (between Boulder and Denver) to Gulf Shores, AL on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico where I had a beach condo.
I moved from Gulf Shores to Green Valley, AZ near the end of July, 2021 and sold my beach condo.
Although my beach condo suffered only minor damage from Hurricane Sally, which hit Gulf Shores in September of 2020, the flood and storm insurance rates went up sky high afterwards.
Since I have also had worsening knee joint issues from an old injury I sustained in the mid-1990's while on temporary duty at Fort Benning, GA when I worked for the Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) at Fort Be...Expand for more
lvoir, VA, which made it difficult and painful to get in and out of the surf and walk on the beach with the shifting sand, I decided I could not justify paying the relatively high cost of living at the beach when I could no longer enjoy the beach. So, I decided to move to Arizona where the cost of living is lower and there are no hurricanes. The much lower humidity is also a bonus since the high humidity on the Gulf Coast was an aspect of living there that I did not enjoy.
I had lived in Tucson, AZ for about 5 years (1997-2002) and enjoyed desert living at that time. Green Valley is about 25 miles south of Tucson with a similar climate, but in a small town setting.
