brian's Story

1 week after graduation i left for bootcamp. I had enlsited in the United states Navy the prior year. so my entrie senior year i was enlisted already. I went to bootcamp in San Diego ca, graduated bootcamp in august 92. my job was as a radioman onboard a United States Navy ship. my basic job was that we set up and maintained all communications throughout the ship and all radio communcations leaving the ship. We were the heart of the ship, if no communications are up and running we cannot communicate with any ships or aircraft or any shore stations, so our role was extremely vital. my first duty station was in Yokosuka Japan for 2 years. I was stationed onboard the Uss Curts FFG-38, my ship was a fast frigate. FFG , Our basic task was anti submarine warfare, that was our primary mission, So we did alot of anti sub warfare exercises at sea. One i will never forget is an exercise we did with a group of U.S Navy Seals. The Seal team boarded our ship and were quickly flown off to an aircraft carrier nearby. The Curts held about 150 crewman onboard. we traveled to many countries. Korea, The phillipines, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Hawaii, Singapore,Thailand, okinawa, egypt and Hong Kong. We supported United nations sanctions against Iraq in the persian gulf. Our job to was to enforce sanctions against all vessels coming in and out of the gulf, Our ship would stop the vessel and a team would board the ship and ensure they were abiding by the U.N sanctions. My ship was very busy for the 2 years i was there but our port visits alwa...Expand for more
ys made up for the hard work we did. Japan was a great experience in my life something i will cherish the rest of my life. After i finished my 2 year tour in Japan, my next duty station was in Bremerton, Washington state. I was stationed on The Uss Arkansas CGN-41. a guided missle cruiser, a much bigger ship and way more powerful. Seattle was another great duty assignment. I loved Seattle , i didnt want to leave. We got out to sea quite a bit, we traveled up and down the coast , stopping in San francisco and San Diego. My ship participated in the commemoration to mark the 50 th anniversary of the of World War ll. President Clinton attended the ceremonies as did many other power players from D.C. Of course, The President wanted to see his ship. The Uss Arkansas. we were given a choice stay on the ship all day wait for the president, or leave the ship and go to the beach and enjoy the sun. President Clinton did come aboard, but i wanted to see Waikiki beach and enjoy the ocean. so yeah, i missed the president. Secret service had the entire base on lockdown anyway. not fun when they are around. My Navy experience was the best time of my life . I discharged honorably from the U.S Navy after a wonderful 4 year enlistment on july 4th 1996. after i left the United States Navy, I hired in with the United States Postal Services 20 years now. I work at the main Processing and distribution center in Pontiac Michigan. I married in 2000 to Emi Arai whom i met in japan in 1993. no kids as of now. living in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
