Brian's Story
Life
Most of you that really knew me back in 1985 will be suprised to see where I ended up. After a miserable first year at Valparaiso University back in 85-86 (my grade point average was more like a blood alcohol level!), I dropped out and entered the United States Navy.
After being stationed on an aircraft carrier out of Japan and seeing all of Asia and the Middle East (not an ideal vacation spot!), I returned to Valpo to finish up my degree. I finished with a B.A. in History and Geography.
I decided to stay in the Naval Reserves after my active service commitment was completed and have a total of just over 20 years of service. I have been called to duty for Operation Desert Storm, Operation Noble Anvil (Kosovo), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Baghdad 2007-2008). Join the Navy, see the world...literally!
Now's the scary part. I decided to go into teaching and pursued my certification and master's at UIC while substitute teaching at Sandburg. I student taught at Sandburg ...Expand for more
and assisted on the coaching staff in 1993 and 1994 when we took the state championship in boy's soccer, and 3rd place in state respectively.
I taught history and geography for 3 years and then took a job as Dean of Students at Plainfield High School. I then moved to Morris High School, where I was assistant principal for 5 years. I worked as co-chair of the Illinois State Deans' Association alongside Dean Sutor and Dean Fry for a few years. Was that an experience working with the guys that used to dole out discipline on us! I am currently the principal of Herscher High School. If you told me back in 1985 that I could have envisioned doing what I do today there is no way I would have believed you.
College
Coming back to college in 1989-90 after the military was an experience. At Valparaiso, I joined the rugby team, after playing for 3 years overseas, and pledged a fraternity. To my surprise, Ed Benoit shows up on pledge night (he graduated May, '89) to help "guide" me through the process. Thanks Ed. Phi Delta Theta!
